Elroy, Bazza & Werewolf hit the beach
« on: March 09, 2010, 16:26 »
One of the great benefits of this forum is being able to get together with other members for combined hunts, so I organised a day with Elroy and Bazza at Thirroul beach down here in Wollongong.

What a beautiful day to be at the beach with the sun shining and the ocean turquoise, and the water just the right temp. Whilst Elroy worked the dry sand, Bazza and I hit the wet sand/shallows with our water machines. Things looked promising, with a line of heavier material along the waterline, and a shallow gutter just behind. I'd only been swinging for 10 minutes when I dug the ring on a chain from the slop. Then a few decimals appeared, and the usual junk - but then the targets dried up completely!

Changed to the Tesoro with the Cleansweep and hit the park behind the beach where things improved slightly - but there were lots of screw caps to contend with. Back on the sand with the Cibola I picked a few more goldies and a junk ring, before deciding to get back in the water with the PI. However as I was about to hop into my water gear I get a phone call requesting my services at a beach further south, so I had to bugger off promptly.

Thanks for the hunt guys - hope you had fun! Sorry I didn't get to say cheerio Bazza.

Ended up with $22.80 & the 2 rings. The ring on the chain I thought was silver - but it may only be stainless steel :(

Let's do it again soon!

    Hey Warewolf
I really enjoyed today meeting two fine enthusiasts, it was in some ways a hard spot, looked very promising though!
I took my excalibur out into the gutter for a while, and jagged a $1 coin, and some junk the total with the excal ended up being $1.10.
Your suggestion to hit the park gave me the opportunity to grab the E-trac and get busy, I pulled $5 and a silver ring.
Elroy and I decided to hit the beach again, and I took off up the northern end, I managed to bag $12.80 in about an hour, then said cheers and goodbye to the mighty Elroy.
I noticed a good cut away at Austimere (can't spell), so pulled over, five minutes of detecting gained me another $2.10.
My total for the day was $21 and a silver ring.
I'm not going to give up on the excal, I still have lots to learn, especially retrieving targets in the surf, fine tuning etc.
i'm definitely up for another outing, your pick of beaches was spot on, that gutter was perfect, and I bet on the right days would give up heaps!
    Thanks again
    Bazza

Well we managed to pull about $60 between us so it wasn't a bad day!

I'm keen to do more water hunting - the lure of gold is too great ;D So whenever you're up for it give us a yell. Elroy can clean up the dry sand whilst we do the shallows :) I'm happy to come to the Shire now & again.

Thirroul & Austinmer are peculiar beaches - both are very busy in summer and I believe rarely hunted - yet they don't produce like they should. Maybe it's all in the water.

Thanks werewolf for the invite, good to meet up with you again.
Bazza, It's great to put a face to the name now and I'm sure likewise, It was a fun day, I netted $18.65 and an Earing, stamped on the back of it was 925, so it was a, I guess a Zirconium.
Not to be outdone I dropped into a one of haunts near home to grab another $2, I only managed to $1, so total was $19.65.
But!!!! I found a Silver chain, that was stamped 923, I think so, that made up for that last dollar...he he

Thanks again for a great day. ;D ;D

Elroy, that chain is a whopper!, well done mate!
No worries warewolf, I'll PM you both with some possible dates to come.
I'm going to take my goggles and snorkel next time, maybe even a weight belt and I'm gonna stay in the troughs until I find gold, hopefully you'll be there with me doing the same while Elroy takes the dry sand apart.
I figure today was a good start, if I see any decent gutters forming my way, I'll let you know.
    Cheers

Hi guys, Just been to the jewellers with the chain and it's definitely silver, he offered to clean it for $20, he polished a little bit on it, and it looks really nice.
I was wondering ,should I get it all cleaned up? I don't wear jewellery, but think it would be nice to have it really shiney, I might wear it sometimes, the clasp still works as well. :o
    Thanks

    Gday elroy,

B4 you fork out your dough...
try half a tablespoon of dry bicarb soda in a rag and rub it through the chain and up and down in a polishing action.repeat if needed
this brings most silver that is  not really black back pretty well.

Hi NSC, Gave it a quick go, and it works a treat, there is absolutely no black on it at all, before I cleaned it.
Yes, I'd rather save the 20 bucks, I'll work on it more tomorrow.
    Thanks heaps.
