Hi alpha,  I haven't done much in red soil but was there any underground telecoms cables or power lines near? I had that on the gold fields and came across a star picket with an orange telstra tag on it an realised why the 705 was playing up like a 2 bob watch. Were the pushed over trees in a line as if they had layed cables?

no they had chopped the old pines out and had pushed all the stums out of the ground and pushed them into semi piles

Turn the tracking on and make sure you don't lift the coil at the end of your swing. Keep your coil flat to the ground, otherwise it can falswe at the end of each sweep.
It is possible that the groubnd is simply very mineralised. If it is, then it's just the nature of VLF detectors to do this. That's why it's called noisy ground. If that is the case, then you are listening to repeatable signals that don't move around. (Assuming you are in prospecting mode.)

If you are coin on the beach, then only use the prospecting mode to pinpoint with, otherwise you will find that you are digging a lot of unnecessary targets. It's a great pinpointing tool but not a very good discriminating tool, unless you are trying to get maximum depth and don't mind digging the extra targets, in which case, I'd dial up the max iron mask to at least eliminate digging iron targets.

    Gday AM,

    IMHO it could be...
    as Mick said- mineralised ground.
                     - Ground Balance...try running in tracking.

Also you may need to put a DD coil on if mineralised.
Sensitivity could be too high for your red dirt.
Swinging too fast for the ground you were on.

If you are new to Xterra's...sometimes they chirp a bit when there are lots of targets which are being processed and discriminated by the Xterra. As Mick said repeatable targets are the ones u want.
    Good luck

I agree with whats been already said, however there is one more thing you can try. select beach mode ( the umbrella icon). This is faster tracking and may help. Remember to use track or manually ground balance after you select this mode.  In prospecting mode with beach mode selected you will only be able to use the Xterra without the iron mask.

    Hope this helps
