problems with x-terra 70
« on: May 14, 2010, 13:06 »
I have an exterra 70 & have had nothing but trouble with it,
It has been back to minelab for repairs 6 times now.
It kept turning it's self off,It had a faulty battery compartment,
I also bought a new 10 inch elip DD coil with it,It would bring up coil error on the screen every time I put it on the detector,It was sent back to minelab & found to be faulty, I had to waite until they got another shipment of coils out from Ireland,
Then it started to act erractic,Random noises,& not detect properly,I changed batteries & tried my friends xterra coil but the thing still  wouldn't work, minelab found a faulty PC board & replaced it(Also my friends x-terra70 has been back to minelab for repairs twice, also having the PCboard replaced)
I just came back from Victoria on a detecting trip,It played up again & it was sent back for repairs,
Honestly I'm sick of problems I have with it,I THINK MINELAB  SHOULD HAVE REPLACED IT LONG AGO,
There is nothing more frustrating to travel many KMS to a location & detect for a short period & the detector packs it in & have to drive home again,
This has happened 6 or7 times now to me & my friend,

I have never seen these types of problems and I have run an xterra 70 for 2 years now. It appears it is not you - it is the detector for sure. the only time I have ever had any problems it is usually when the batteries are getting flat. having said that, my partner and I run Xterras with PIs as well - (me) a 3500 and (her) a 2200. We have had the Xterras since day one and we have most definitely had times where she can 'hear' a piece of gold and I do a test I can't and visa versa. Unhappily it sounds like you have got a dud. the only other time I have heard of coil problems is if they are not the coils designed for the terra (ie coils for PI detectors and this doesn't look like the case). can you please keep us updated if this gets resolved.

All out in the open here,no deleting loud posts.I have found Minelab to have excellent after sales service if needed.Try ringing a whitegoods manufacturer and getting straight through to there service boss.   Rwork

My Xt70 did the would not turn on trick.
Minelab happily and speedily ( fixed in 1 day) replaced the part under warranty, that was 2 yrs ago and no hassles since.
Luckily I live 20 mins away from minelab in SA so my postage and down time was minimal.
To the bloke who had all those repairs, I agree they should replace or completely rebuild it to as new for you...keep at em.

My Exterra 70 has its own weird behaviour sometimes with screaming noises and screen going mental. I turn it off and restart it and  it comes good. My mates control buttons stick and sometimes dont work and his screen has gone blank in some areas with parts missing. As well. It does make you wonder? seeya Ned
