Which coils do you guys use?
« on: May 28, 2010, 17:03 »
 Hi Folks,
I have the standard concentric coil for coin & relic hunting & the High freq. DD for prospecting, as per the manual.
I believe you can use either in either mode. Is this so & and can you tell me of your opinions?

Hi Gemangi, I have only been using my DD prospecting but after reading Snoopy's post I gave it a go today (will post finds latter)and like he said seemed easier to pinpoint, felt lighter and defiantly separated the targets in the trashy areas better. I think i will be using it for park hunting in future. I would use the water proof concentric on the beaches though.

These days I'm mostly using the 5x10 or 6in concentric coils. I've very reluctant to use the standard coil now. Mostly because $2 coins tend to give weak signals on these coils and it's too easy to walk over them. Probably why I got annoyed with it when I went out and hunted with a chap who used a Sovereign. He was finding goldies constantly and I was coming up empty. Salt was further rubbed into the wound when he hunted over exactly the same spot that I'd just hit and pulled up a goldie or 2! I was ready to get rid of the X-Terra after that! The 2 coils I've just mentioned are good because this is less likely to happen with them. The 6in coil gives you a fairly good feel for what a target is and throws out a field that is more like an 8in coil. The 5x10 only has half the same feel, but at least I know I'm not walking over the goldies.

I attached the Hi-Freq DD coil just to test it out (about 2 weeks after I got the Xterra) and haven't taken it off since. To me the DD coil is like using a sharp long flat blade to scan with (perpendicular to the ground) so it is easy to separate trash and damn easy to pinpoint.

Find the target, scan it a couple of times to 'narrow down' the location, press pinpoint, lock it in and then pull back towards you. When the signal stops, your target is at the nose of the coil. Easy.

    Hi
I predominately use the elliptical HF coil works really well on the beach even in the wet sand and is easy to pinpoint with ( never use the pin point mode just the drag back method). The 6  in HF  is surprisingly deep and I use it in rock pools and shallow streams. Haven't used the stock coil since I bought the others.

    Hope this helps

Enjoyed the article in "Gold gem & Treasure" well done

Thanks Folks for the input. I've been swapping back & forth between my coils and have become a bit indesisive & just wanted to know your thoughts on the subject.
    Happy Hunting.

    G1,

You know that I mostly use the 5x10" HF DD ...my standard coil is getting cobwebs.
Like snoopy since I put it on the 70 I cant take it off..its unreal.
Seperates better, light, smooth bottom seems to glide over the grass.
    Wish it was waterproof.
I also use the the 6" HF DD .
    Happy Xterra-ing

Thanks NSC. I see you done rather well today.
Yes I knew that you are using the DD coil with success.
I'm going out tomorrow & have a hunt in one of the city parks with the DD coil and see how I go.
    Regards,
