Treasure Snoop Review or BrettCNC's long winded intro to metal detecting.
Hi, Although I am hardly qualified or experienced enough to write a real review, I can say that the treasure snoop is good enough to pique my interest in this hobby! I have had it for a few months and have found lots of interesting junk in my baron backyard. But then I am easily amused... within a couple days I found an RAAF lapel emblem, and heaps of plumbing fittings, buried keys, padlock and interesting junk...
Most detecting was done in my largish backyard in Murray Bridge SA. The whole yard is full of iron junk but I am convinced there is good treasure there somewhere.

The instruction manual is not very helpful. It basically says that the notch and discrmination modes will reduce the number of signals but you may be miss coins and jewellery. This is an accurate statement. Remember I am a newbie but with NOTCH, I can not detect iron or 5,10,20,$1,$2 coins and who knows what else. With discrimination or disc/notch it is similar but will still detect large chunks of copper and brass. I usually detect in ALL METAL mode and when I find a target switch to NOTCH and dig if it still signals or dig even if it doesn't- depends on how hungry I am at the time.

The 'Snoop signal is a brief beep/buzz when moved over a target. In ALL METAL mode the beep is a dull buzz monotone no matter what the target. In NOTCH or DISC mode the beep is higher monotone pitch and much more exciting.
A LED indicator on the screen hints at what it may be by pointing to printed images next to the LED display-eg. ring pull, nail/bottle cap,5c or 25c coin. Many a time it has indicated a 25cent piece but I am yet to dig one up! The target indicator can be accurate though, basically the closer to 25c, the bigger the piece might be.
There is also a depth indicator on the screen which almost always indicates 4.5 - 6" no matter how deep the target actually is.
Probably due to my inexperience I haven't really had confidence in using the NOTCH or DISC functions or relying on the depth indicator. I have had some frustrations digging deeper and deeper and finally finding the offending galv. nail in the side of the hole right next to the coil when the display indicates the 25c target is 5" deep.

I have successfully retrieved matchbox cars from my nephews sandpit at 12" but have not been able to find a coin in the park with the 'Snoop.

SO, anyway, last weekend I tried out the rototiller and wreaked scorched earth policy on a big area before firing up the 'Snoop. I soon had pockets full of nails, toothpaste tubes, .22 ammo-live and fired more plumbing fittings etc Then I went over a spot where there was a delapidated shed we pulled down several years ago. Bingo, it was like Christmas, if you like rusty junk for Christmas. The first item was a rusty file. The bigger I made the hole, the more interesting it got and no need for the detector- several very good condition bottles with lids: Dettol, Aspro, Toilet Parrafin (paper label in good nick) and heaps of wierd brass fittings, meccano looking wheel, a half can of food? with petrified something a complete silver plated razor holder, broken china tea cup and so on. I reckon I found some old codgers stash of 'that'll be handy one day'. I stopped digging after filling my plastic treasure box and went to bed that night dreaming of that fella's tin of secret pocket money and war medals...

The 'Snoop has fulfilled it's role for me- that is to see if I would get a kick out of relic hunting.
So I have saved up and will be ordering my E Trac tomorrow. I have already ordered the garrett pin-pointer too.

In conclusion, the Treasure Snoop beeps when it is waved over metal. Notch and Disc may disappoint.
Thus endeth my review of the Treasure Snoop -
