10.5 inch DD coil puzzles.
« on: September 01, 2010, 15:55 »
Hi folks, As some of you may know I have just purchased a 10.5 inch DD coil for my X-Terra 705. The puzzling thing about it is that when I ID it using my X-Terra it comes up as a C5 coil which is the standard concentric coil. It is obvious in its design that it is a DD coil and has an M on it for Medium frequency.

I took it to my local Minelab dealer (Miner's Den) and all they could say was that's bizarre and checked my 705 by plugging in one of there new 10.5 DD and that registered as a DM coil which is correct. (It may have been D5)
They advised me to contact a guy at Minelab Adelaide which I did and he couldn't explain it and just said that it is a 7.5kh and still should work okay which it seems to do.

Has anyone else came up against this and is able to shed a bit more light on it?

Regards,
Gemangi

Maybe your coil is made in Bulgaria  ;D ;D ;D

Seriously who knows right? I have yet to get a 10.5 MF DD coil. They're selling for $225! Dang!

Apparently these babies punch an additional 40% deeper compared to the 5x10 DD coil

    I'm saving up for one....

    Hi Snoopy, Got your PM.
    .
Re the coil, that's the info I like to hear.
Do you know of anyway to determine the frequency of a coil.
$225.00 is the price here at Miners Den.

     Hi Gemangi.
To help sort out the coil's frequency. When I bought it. I had the X-terra 30, which could only take the medium frequency coil.It worked on it, so I can only assume that that is what it is. It's an unusual situation in the way it is showing up on the screen of you detector.

    Hi Mick,
I'm happy enough with the coil it just mystifies me thats all. I tried it on G2's 705 and it showed up the same.
My strike rate at anytime isn't that great and the weather here hasn't encouraged me to get out much, just had a bit of a go on a local park and managed a $2.00 and cheap ring, both near the surface.

On the comparison test with 10 x 5 eliptical coil with the targets just sitting on the ground it picks them up at about 70mm higher from the ground. I'm looking forward to having a real go with it.

Rain shouldn't matter with the XTerra though should it? Especially if you have the stock coil on plus the enviro cover on the actual unit. Plus the Garrett pinpointer is splashproof so grab a raincoat and get out there!  ;D

    Cheers

Light rain should hurt it, but if it get heavy, you'llwant to get it out of the rain.

I can't find a 10.5" DD coil for the X-terra on the Minelab website.  They all appear to be 10".  Do you mean the 10" x 5" DD?
