Gone over to the darkside.
« on: September 26, 2009, 16:12 »
Gooday All.
Well after a LOT of investigation and reading up of things on different forums I have gone and bought a Whites spectra V3.
I also got a 10x6 eclipse DD coil as well.
I was concerned at first that the setup and operation of this device would overwhelm and kill me, but I have to say that although there is a LOT of stuff you can alter on it all you have to do is use the preset programs to get started.
The advanced stuff will come with confidence in the device.
It came with the cordless phones, and they seem to work very well but are damned tight fitting and HOT!
I will get another set of unerchin phones for the summer.
Much lighter and better balanced than the old explorer and a much higher resolution on the vdi numbers.
The spectragraph I thought would be a joke but it does give a lot of info on different targets and with study you can see the difference between a dollar coin and a screw top, different alloys give different responses to the output frequencies and this is shown on the graph, very cool!
I have not got to use it much yet only picked it up yesterday and its bloody raining (thats good).
I will get to know it a bit more and will try to give a better report next time.

cheers

Rob.

i"m really looking foword to your thoughts on this detector i"v been keeping an eye on the forums about it but so far it"s been quite quiet i reckon it would be good at locating gold rings in the grass.
keep us posted on how it works out for ya Rob.

    Rob,

Would be interested to hear what battery life on a new set of 1.5 volts you get out of your headphones?

Great stuff Oldpenny,I to have been keeping an I on this unit and it does sound good,I like the 3 frequency settings it has and only needs one coil,it has been hard to find some good reports on it,the etrac was the same when it first came out,I have a mate who wants one and is waiting untll after the new year, was there a toss up between the whites and the etrac ? if so what was the major factor, good luck with it Im sure you will enjoy it.  cheers Rusty

Hi Rob i am rusty's friend and i have found some very interesting things within my first hour of testing out the V3. i am so glad i have got the V3 because even in one hour i was able to work out some important features which will help us. i tried coins and jewelery mode first and yes it did find tragets good test 1 over, at this stage i was starting to get worried because a gold rings and pull tabs where coming in at 38 and $1 coins and screwtops came in at 63. :-\ :-\ i thought to my self what have i brought here i then went into coin mode and got no signals at all with Australian decimal coins  :-\. I then thought to myself that i have had quite a bit of experience with detectors i will use the pro mode well the world opened up again and i could here all responses  :) :) i then tried to work on the graph as a second source of info and discovered some very interesting things.
    1. with gold and pull tabs while VDI was 38 on the graph i noticed if it was a gold target the red graph was highest if it was a pull tab the red graph was second yes  :o finally a way to tell the difference.

    2. with screwtops the top 2 graphs were very close compared to a $1 coin

i hope this helps people and i think that we could be on a winner here because  i was able to repeat the results very time i tried it. So far so good

    Hey Rob
i went out into some parks today and i have discovered some interesting things. i learnt how to ajust the vdi numbers that are rejected and acpected, "live" as they call it. This enabled me to tune in ours coins and tune out some pull tabs or just part of the reading for a pull tab so i can make a decision on which numbers to reject. While the detector is in detecting mode use the left and right arrow keys to highlight discrimination then press enter and swing your coil over say a dollar coin on the screen it will show the hits on the 3 frequencies and most will be in the red, just look down at the vdi scale on the screen to determine which numbers need changing scroll down or up to the corresponding vdi number and press enter you will see now some of the red turn to green swing the detector over the traget again to see the hits and ajust the next vdi number more of the hits turn green i did this until all the hits were green i then did the same to my next coin and noe i have the V3 accepting all our coins. I then completed the next sequence on all the pull tabs i had but i only change a few so that if any red appears on my hit screen its probably rubbish. i then started to detect and got a vdi 88 and target depth of about 7-8" i decided to dig it up and it was an 1822 thripence(i think thats how you spell it). Well i hope i am adding to the poll of info i am taking it down to the beach late this week and i will see how it goes there.
