This Sovereign scares me...
« on: March 10, 2011, 10:42 »
I haven't had a chance to really try out my new (2nd hand) Sov GT except for 10mins here and there in the backyard and mannnnnn.... this machine scares me a bit - so many buttons and knobs :-\ I feel so gumby with it. It's making all these strange noises! Sov GT experienced users are probably laughing right now :D

I think I want to go to my happy place with the X-Terra 705  :D

Any advice for a Sovereign beginner will be most appreciated! I'm going to spend a few hours this weekend going over the manual and watching Des Dunne's youtube clip (also reading that forum thread you sent me Meggie).

Wish me luck.

Cheers
Snoop

Sov's pretty simple once you have spent some time with the machine. I always use minimum discrimination, fairly high volume and threshhold loud enough to hear the small changes.I leave notch on min. but it does work, if you try 5c you can eliminate them and still leave 20c yet supposed to be same material i think.  I always use iron mask but havn't done much with quiet search. You will need a good shovel for the deep targets on the beach.I didn't like the speaker under my elbow so i did some internal wiring. The headphone socket is suppressed and doesn't drive a speaker very loud. OK if you like headphones. I have the rechargable battery pack and the optional 8 AA pack. Optional 12v charger is about $45 and looks to be worth no more than a normal phone charger.
If you hip mount the box they are prone to cord damage on the connectors. I tie strapped mine in a loop to the waterproof case to take the load of it.   Rwork

You'll pick it up real soon Snoopy and you will love it.

On the beach especially on the wet sand it's a depth monster.

I find when in silent search mode i tend to get a bit deeper.

Also any wonder why soon after Werefolf sells his he gets another. ::)

I found my back yard had too much trash and my Sov GT went nuts. Start in an area you know well with your Xterra and the learning curve will be a lot smoother and more enjoyable.

    gday Snoop

Glad u finally got it ok
I was the same with my Excal 2 (basically a waterproof Sovereign)
I just stuck at it on the dry, wet sand and in the water
I must admit, I did miss a TID meter a lot at 1st (talk about bottle tops ...phew I never have dug so many)
After a little while, the different sounds start to mark sense
What coil have u on it / standard ?
I would say maybe practise at the beach
I reckon on the sand is the best place to learn a new machine.
(and like someone else said take a long handled digger with you, your gunna need it with a Sov. ;D)
    Happy signals mate

Yep - I sold mine thinking that the Etrac would be better on the beach - it ain't!! Sov (and Excal) rule the beach :) The tones are superb once you get used to them.

You'll pick it up easily Snoop, but in all honesty you won't need the meter on the beach as you'll be digging everything anyway.

On the sand - silent search, iron mask on, no notch, no disc, volume at max is the way to go.

As NSC has said - practice on the beach - esp pinpointing.

Down the track add the big WOT coil and you'll be flying!

coiltec makes them. they give a little more depth, but mainly they cover more ground they best for the beach.on land I think they would be hard to pinpoint and u would have to turn your sensitivity down or you'll be dig some big holes. I don't actually have one, but I really want one because I do the beaches a lot.

Mossie, the WOT is made by Coiltek,(here in oz i think) the idea of a big coil is greater depth and more area covered each swing. It makes a huge beach look do-able. I purchased a Coiltek 12x8 recently and had improved results over the stock 8in round coil. Pin pointing no problem ( dunno about the WOT)

Snoopy Take the GT to the beach a few times it will make it a bit easier to get use to.I freaked out when I first got mine and went into my back yard the constant chorus of sounds was a bit overwhelming . Coming from a MXT to the GT was a bit  culture shock but it all makes sense after a while stick with it I,m sure you will grow to like it.

In the older Sov's the standard coil was an 8' unless you purchased the Pro. version which came with the 10" which is a heavier version of the standard 10' GT coil.  Rwork

Too right about big holes at the beach.
Tonight I had a 3" jar lid on the waterline at 12" down and the GT was screaming at me. The hole kept caving in and I only have a 1.5 litre plastic jug with 14mm holes I drilled into it so it took ages to dig! And all for a jar lid!  :(

Mossie - the sov detects tiny (and I mean grain of rice tiny) bits of aluminium in all metal mode at some crazy depths. So I imagine it would be great at the goldfields. Many have told me how good it is on parks but for now I'll stay on the beach while I learn the machine. Last week I dug up a $2 coin at around 2 feet deep. Don't quote me on that but it sure looks like it was down that deep! I would never dig a hole that deep at a park  :D

Snoop, the aluminium detects easier than small bits of gold and when you ground balance the GT i think it turns the power down to stop giving false signals. At the Wedderburn Token hunt my old Sov. would keep giving squarks while the gt with balance ran smooth.
