Xterra coils
« on: November 10, 2009, 13:22 »
Gday  X-terra users,

I was wondering what coil you are swinging.??? and why ?
I am thinking about getting another coil and cant decide which.
Presently I have the standard 9" 7.5khz and the 5" x 10" DD 18.75khz coils.

I am leaning towards getting a 6" coil ( comes in 7.5 khz concentric or 18.75khz dd ) OR a 10.5" DD coil ( comes in 7.5 or 18.75khz)
I have been told the 10.5" coils makes the Xterra front heavy / unbalanced ...but would like the extra coverage.
Any imput and advice is  welcome.
Happy Xterra-ing.

    Gday again,

Yep, I got the 6" DD 18.75khz (HF) coil.
The 10.5" weighs 585grams compared to 330g for the 6" (standard 9" coil weighs 450g)
I put extra weight on my 9" to make up 585g and it is too heavy for my liking.

Also the 10.5 DD 18.75khz is fairly similar to my other coil ( 10x5" elliptical DD 18.75khz) and will only go an inch or two deeper.
The 6" will be great for all the trashy ares I come across and is waterproof.
    Happy tektin.

    Hi Rob,

Yeah, coil arrived yesterday...I was looking forward to putting it on
Wife spotted it and said " I wondering what to get you from Christmas" and hid it away - DRAT !
Maybe I should have put it on HER visa card .LOL
Have to wait for Santa now......oh well, I have been good (mostly) this year.

    Gday Rob,

Yeah," good things come to those who wait "
6x4" eh - sounds interesting, is it a DD ? how many Khz ? how deep will it punch ?
We should be picking the cherries from those trashy areas soon mate
Which Whites model do you use again ?
What frequency/s does the Whites run at ?
I have heard only good things about the Whites.
    Happy days Rob.

    Gday Oldpenny,

Theres an article in this months Gold Gem & Treasure magazine abouth the Whites spectra V3
    ...written by BT I think.
I like the idea it can size targets, to hopefully eliminate screw caps etc.
I have problem with squashed drink screw caps, they show up as 30 or 32 (same as $2 and $1 coin)
Nice machine mate...top of the range.
Do you drive Rolls as well ?
    happy tecting

    IDing screw caps.
There are a couple of ways of IDing screw caps with an X-Terra 70. The first applies to the VCO pinpoint on shallow targets. Screw caps will scream harder than a coin. In fact, unless a $1 coin is lying on the surface, you will find that a screw caps sound will reach the highest pitch possible for the VCO.
The second way to tell a screw cap 9I've only just picked up on it) is when pinpointing using the prospecting mode. Using the prospecting mode is talked about on the Findmall forum, so it's not new info, but it blew me away when I experimented with it. I'm finding that it seems to work best with the 6in coil. I only have the med frequency coil, but I'm sure that the DD 6in coil will do the same thing. When you have located a possible good target switch over the prospecting mode and pass over the target paying close attention to the width of the signal. (Experiment with your sweep speed to get it right.) You will soon notice that $2, $1 coins and screw caps will give off different width signals.
I've been somewhat interested in the V3 too, especially with the width ID, but to be honest, I think that you will find that the X-Terra will hold it's own with it. Nothing wrong with having more toys to play with though! it's all fun.

    Gday Mick from Dubbo,

Your a scholar and a gentleman.
I'll give both of those suggestions a trial or two mate.
Yep, I'm on the findmall xterra site too...I've learnt a lot there- but not that trick yet.
I think I met you there before, I'm the guy born in good old Narromine. Gliding capital of NSW.
I haven't been switching from coin to Prospecting...only the other way around when gold detecting ( trying to id iron or not )
Happy with the Xterra, not looking around, just trying to keep up with the latest and greatest.
    thanks mate.

I remember talking to you about Narromine. Actually, I was half a chance for getting my feet off the ground today. In a Jabaru though. I'd love to have a crack at a glider. That would be more fun than powered flight. ;D
Oldpenny. I liked reading about your experience with the V3. It's hard to find Aussies that have used it and in particular, picking the difference between screw caps and Goldie's. I've got an early XLT and have found that if you set the DC sensitivity to 23, you can hear a distinct difference in pinpoint between the 2. The XLT collects dust most of the time though.

     Hi Oldpenny.
You've lost me on the green fish. Dirt fishing is as close as comment as I can get.
I took the X Explorer out for a spin this afternoon. I was motivated by a chap whom I met yesterday who only started swinging an E-Trac 6 months back. It's a beautiful detector. He is also a local. I tried my luck on an oval that has school kids play on it most luch times. It's a bit away from the school and unless you knew that the school did this, you'd never know. I was amazed at the fact that I didn't get a single target worth checking out in an hour. Went to plan B and pulled up $5 and an early half penny. Can't make out the year yet.
I hardly used the XLT and haven't read much of the instructions yet, but the DC sensitvity is the audio adjustment on the VCO pinpoint. Default is 30. I think it goes up to 50 or something. Most users crank it right up to get max depth out of it. I played around with it and found that you can get target subtley out of it. 23 or 24 being the most effective on goldies verses screw caps.

Yeah. the Jabaru is an ultralight  aircraft. It looks a bit like a Cessna.
Good luck with the V3. I read BT's write up in the mag today. It covered the basics, but you can't beat a forum for the good oil.

    Hey Croweater,
How is the 6" coil performing?
I have just ordered a 705 and would like to know how you are getting on.

My XTerra 705 came with the standard 9" coil with a bonus 5x10 DD coil (18.75khz). I put this 5x10 on about two weeks ago and have not removed it since. I love the wiggle and pull back method for this elliptical coil which I learned from this forum. Makes pinpointing a breeze.
