305 and goldfields
« on: August 01, 2011, 21:31 »
Can I use my X-Terra 305 in the goldfields to look for gold?

I know that it is specifically designed for coin detecting. I ask because my in-laws live in Bendigo and it would be a great excuse to leave the kids with them and go a hunting gold.

Cheers

Short answer is Yeh but Nah its not a gold detector but you will be able to pick up  large nuggets close to the surface but these are very few and far between, you would be better off hireing a gold detector for a few days.

As lxss said ,you can use it but it is unlikely to find gold. On the weekend we had a bloke come out on our club outing with some type of tesoro(maybe diablo) It would show a bullet in your hand up to 2" /50mm but when we buried it in the mineralised ground you could hardly hear it just under the ground. His plan was to use the coin machine to find enough gold to buy a more powerfull rig. Most gold around .22 projectile size is usually down at least 150mm. Bury a bullet (lead only)and see how the 305 goes.A lot of the small gold being found is only 2" or 50mm.Get the smallest shotgun pellet you can find (around No. 7/10 shot) and flatten it and see if you can hear it. Hire machine costs around $50 a day,bpc charge $10 on our outing days only.

Strait answer in no. It in no where near sensative enough. I have taken my 30 out once as an experiment. I tested it on some real small lead sinkers (1 gram) and it couldn't hear it. Even though I was scratching the coil with it. Get a second hand PI machine iof you want to find gold. There is a local chap and his wife taking out the AT Pro onto the gold fields. They haven't found gold with it yet, but my money would still be on a PI machine.
