9 Volt Batteries
« on: August 23, 2011, 08:26 »
If your machine runs 9 volt batteries and you are buying Alkalines for your machine, look at a cheaper alternative! You can get 2 Rechargeable Lithium 600 mah for $8 on Ebay plus postage $6. Your Alkalines eg coppertops are only 520 mah and cost you around $17 for 4.  The rechargeables you can recharge up to 1000 times! Chargers are cheap some are thrown in when you buy batteries.  seeya Ned  ;)

I am sure they will work well but the nominal voltage is 8.4V (7 x 1.2v cells).
Probably not enough to diminish detector performance.

    I recently got the 9V (8 x 1.2v cells for a nominal 9.6V) NIMH batteries.
Higher voltage but ideal for 9V devices. The capacity is about a third at about 230Mah but enough for 10 to 15 hours detecting.

I've tried those in my Tesoros and there was a definite issue with them not being true 9v. Machines did not run well.

As per Tony I went with the true 9v (9.6v) rechargeables and they have been excellent.

I contacted  Fisher head office they said the performance will not be affected until the voltage drops to below 6.9 volts. On my machine! But running on lower mah than the alkalines will reduce time before they go flat. These batteries are higher Mah than the Alkalines so they should last longer! Ned ::)

    Two things that need considering

The Physical size of the battery. True 9 volt rechargeable batteries do not fit my Fisher without modification.

    Discharge curves.

I think it is a case of try them and see how they go. All detector's that require 9V will react differently.
Remember that Voltage is basically "electrical pressure" and every electrical circuit requires a minimum amount to operate as their designers intended. I wouldn't be concerned with the mAh rating too much as this is likened to the capacity of a fuel tank......enough for a whole day detecting is all that is needed.
Also, many circuits are regulated down to a specific value.

Smart move to contact the designer's for their recommendations.

    Tony.

PS    I just wanted to add that this is a very useful post by Neddy and I didn't want to belittle it by adding my comments regarding potential issues with 9V rechargeables. It would appear that most 9V detectors will operate just fine with < 9V. Tesoro might be the one to be careful of ???

Tesoro work fine using true 9 volt rechargable batteries...the 8.4v will work in the Cibola, but you will require a spare (or two) before the day is out

The charger used can be of outmost importance to the success of using rechargeable cells , even more so when using fully assembled batteries.

I have been using 350 mah lithium rechargeables in my Fisher  Gold Bug2 now for a few weeks and the machine runs perfectly with no loss of depth at all. and no sign of going flat after 8hrs constant use. I have just taken delivery of 600 mah batteries it will be interesting to see how many hours use I will get out of them. I usually recharge the batteries as soon as I get home but if I am away and not able to do that its handy to have the extra juice in the tank. seeya Ned ;D

    Hi Guys,
These are the batteries i use in my Pistol Probe. They are true 9.6 nimh recharbles 230 mah.. They also come with a car charger. The ones i use in my v3 are Sanyo Eneeloop which are also nimh. I have used these batteries for 3 years in my exterra 70 and 2 years in my v3 and they just keep going and going. The latest eneeloops can be charged 1500 or more times up against the old ones 1000 or more.

    Regards Beepn.

    Hi Ozjesteroz,

I bought the batteries, 240 charger and car charger off a good mate who only had them for a short time. But he purchased them off the net so if you type in Powerex and supplier you will get a lead to where you can purchase them.
