Xt70 and 6 in 18.75kHz and sub gram gold
« on: September 06, 2011, 08:07 »
Hi all
minelab claims that the 6 inch 18.75kHz Coil works on the Xt70 for sub gram gold nuggets
has anybody tested the 6in coil on gold with that size nugget
in the ground or on the bench ?

point of the question is , is the 6in coil worth getting to even try for sub gram gold. ?
any reply appreciated.
thanks

hi .i use it on the 305.havent got a nug yet but in testing the 6"is
very good on small bits i think its better than my etrac
but the etrac might handle hot ground better .if you got an x-terra i think its a must 8)

Hi Guys Girls , this mightin mean much but my xterra 705 picks up 1 grain of gold with the 10x5 18 .5 eliptical
In gold mode easy 1/2" to 1"  air test

    1 Gram = 15.4323584 Grains

    hi all,
    my thoughts on the 6".
Love it, have tried on a couple occasions in the triangle attached to my 705. No gold, but finds small shotgun pellets with no trouble. Guess if the small gold was under the coil I would have found it!
Recently spent a morning at Watts Gully SA with the 705+6". For a place that is flogged,I still picked up tiny bits of wire and a tiny tack at 3-4". Recommended.

I have owned and used an Exterra 70 with a six inch coil for gold detecting. The machine will pick up small nuggets below 0.1 grms easily. The coil performs much better than the 10x5 inch.  I have found a small nuggets in the past with it. When detecting with this coil,  swing very slowly(4 second sweep) this allows you to hear the tiny targets better in the mineralised ground conditions. Bury a  tiny test nugget an inch into the ground  if you havent got one use a tiny piece of lead. Adjust your threshold at a point you can hear the target the clearest, this is important, dont just turn it on until you hear a faint buzz, set it carefully. Dont set your machines sensitivity too high otherwise you will have to put up with a lot of ground noise and you will miss the small target signals gold gives.  Some times all you will get is a small break in the threshold so listen very carefully and investigate all iffy faint signals and most important of all dont be in a hurry! Good luck hope this helps seya Ned

Thanks for the great info. Ive got the 305 and was wondering do I get the 6'' or the 10x5". Even though discussions are based on the 705 this has helped. Well I was looking at the 10x5" but now I am not so sure. The 6" is really good for fine stuff.

If slowing down to 4 second sweep and 1/3 overlap between sweeps as recommended for concentrics then no going to cover a lot of ground per hour. If using the 6" I would not be in a big hurry.

    Cheers

I don't think the gold coil will work on the 305,something to do with the frequency it runs on.
One of the many Xterra users will know which coil is suitable for your machine.

You are right the 305 doesnt have the high frequency of the 505 or 705.

Yeah, the base model doesnt come with all the mod cons. The 305 is not designed to be a gold detector.

The 305 doesn take the 9" 3kHz conc coil. It takes the others
    6" conc 7.5Khz
6" DD 18.75 Khz (The most sensitive X-TERRA metal detector coil available, it is great for sub-gram nuggets, specimens and gold jewellery. Also ideal for shallow streams. - Minelab)
9" conc 7.5 Khz (standard coil)
    9" conc 18.75Khz
    10" DD 7.5 kHz
    10" DD 18.75 Khz
    10x5" DD Elliptical 18.75 Khz

The prices range from $175-$225  from Miners Den Website
