Cast iron pot

Anyone have any ideas what this was used for?

    looks like a smelting pot. why there is a hole in the bottom ill leave to someone else to divulge  ???

    I think it's more likely a pole cap or similar.  The pot looks like it would fit over the end of a pole, the 'hole' in the bottom is likely where the fastening nut would go on a pretruding bolt.

    Then there's the flange with the hole on the side which something else is probably secured to.

    Something like what I've attached here maybe?  Just an older version...

    just a guess , but could it be something to lock of a garden tap, or something on a steam engine, stopping a tap from being turned on or of
