I found that my Propointer sometimes won't detect a rusty iron object if it is so badly rusted that the metal in the middle is de-laminating (dark black and flakey) unless it is put right near then end, the thick iron oxide coating seems to shield it.

My Pinpointer played up yesterday for the first time. It kept making a siren noise and wouldn't detect. I tried removing the battery and refitting it which didn't help. I had a new battery in the ute and after fitting it, all was back to normal.
Without the pointer i would have had to give up for the day, most targets were down a handspan or around 8". It would have made a messy plug in the rain if i had to break up all the soil to wave over the coil.

That siren sound is the low battery indicator. Had one come back doing that, didn't realize what it was until phil told me. Good thing you had a spare batt rwork.
