The day my propointer went mad!
« on: November 12, 2011, 21:05 »
After 10 days back at work I was itching to get some more learning time with the etrac. So at 5 am down to the beach I went thinking I would dig everything to get an idea whats going on. Problem is the propointer was all over the shop and a lot of the time it just wouldn't stop. Swapped batteries same prob. I was about to throw it into the sea so I gave up and went home.

Thinking about it during the day I thought I wonder if it's the etrac? Its only started since i bought it. I usually put the Ace 350 down beside me while I dig with no problems. This afternoon I met up with Landlubber for a beach hunt and tried out my theory. Bingo propointer fixed. Just got to make sure I put the etrac further away.  :-[ egg on face but glad I didn't need a new propointer.

I found that as well with my Etrac, sometimes the propointer would muck up, but if I leave the Etrac in pinpoint mode while using the pointer it doesn't bother it.

It's now official dead :( with very little use) looks like I'm in for a new one. The switch has crumbled and it's falsing like no tomorrow.  Don't think it worth the postage back to the states.  Will find a local to look at it one day. Anyone else have one die so quickly?

Buttsy, have you removed the rubber switch-cap?
Mine wouldnt turn off last nite and today I puled the rubber off and blew around in there and scraped some dirt away and it clicked up (was moving up and down but not clicking)
Surely another switch could be installed by a tech (even if he charged $40) and it would be cheaper than a new one.
I'm no expert but the switch looks tiny and would be the first thing to bugger up?

I've managed to dodge the switch back but it won't last as one of the little metal contacts had broken. It now has to be held on too work ??? It's as clean as a whistle in the actual switch. My biggest problem is the constant chatter that won't go away. I will definitely get it checked out by a local tech unless I find it's cheap enough to send back. It's only three months old with little use so pretty annoying. More annoying is I get very little time to detect and I'm going away for work on tue and camping out on locked up crown land which I believe has very little detecting but used to be hammered by people. I'm itching for a night hunt and to have a crack at the $100 award. Chances are slim now.

    Cheers Buttsy

    Buttsy,

With CP on this one. I have given mine a fair workout for over a year or so and it still working well. But I have covered both the switch and microphone with fluorescent duct tape. Hasn't missed a beat and no issue know with dirt and dust and I can find it if I leave it near a find..

Have had duct tape on it from near new, it physically broke :o the contact broke into two. Looking at it's such a weak switch I will need to replace it.

Postage isn't that much back to the States and they will send you a brand new one - sheesh people maybe a lot of you just love tinkering with things once they are broken- no offence to anyone, but I cant understand why people prefer band-aid solutions to a new pointer.

Mine was constantly falsing, changing batteries didn't help, but then I put 10c between the screw cap and battery to push it down on the contacts and it's fixed  ;D

Yep had to do something similar ant and its been good since.
Also keen to test the idea of my detector been to close and causing the pointer to chatter, i always put it down to ground mineralization but after reading the above I think they might be on to something.

    Buttsy,
Having to hold on the switch for it to work is quite useable for your trip away.
I turn mine off after checking a plug for a target, even if I need my Lesche to dig some more dirt away. Then grab the pointer switch it on again and repeat.

Occasionally mine did play up and I had to hold the button down and you will get used to it very quickly.
Obviously it's better fully working but don't give up the hunt.

Because my working day starts at 5am and finishes at 5 pm ..ten days at a time :( then I have two toddlers to look after until 7pm... 8)..I struggle to get any time behind the detector....so night hunting seems to be the answer. Hope that answers your question.

Yeh not received yet so yet to test their repairs. But I thought for sending it in the post at Christmas that's not a bad turn around. They have emailed me a invoice of repairs and even put a new battery in it! At least Garrettt USA seem to have some idea how to look after there customers.  ::)

Question, why send your Propointer back to the US, when their in OZ as well, or is the OZ agency low on customer service, just wondering as i purchased my Propointer from Garrett Australia cheaper than total cost from OS.
