Found this on the beach after a big wash out.

I think it is a brass welding rod or something. Thought it was gold at first.

Won't be a welding rod as brass is silver soldered.

It does look like brass and you would've been fooled when uncovering this find.  :D

Thanks all. No it wasn't corroded at all and when I got home I dropped it in straight hydrochloric acid and it dulled off a bit then with a bit of bicarb rub came up like it is now.

It does look more gold then brass in the pic but on saying that a lot of old shear keys were made from pot metal and had that look. I changed a few in old lathes that looked exactly like that. I'm not a boat person but would imagine old boats having shear pins like that in there driveline? On saying that here's hoping it's gold :)

Gold is very heavy, nearly 50% more than the weight of lead for the same size. i think specific gravity lead 11 and gold around maybe 17.  You should be able to judge if it is a lot heavier than surf sinkers similar size.

If it is 1cm x 1cm, then you could measure the length and work out what it should weigh. Gold has a specific gravity of 19.3, so is 19.3 times heavier than water which weighs 1gm / cm3.

    A 10cm length of this stuff should weigh around 19.3gm x 10= 193gms (roughly 193x$55= $10,600 by the way)

    Does that help at all?

    cheer, shaun.

Followed this thread for a while now.

I do not think its gold because if you look at the end the way it is sheared off, it reminds me of brass or similar metal snapping in two. If Gold is in its pure state (24K) and was forcefully attempted to be broken in two, i think it would just bend, stretch, twist ect....

Unless it is (18K), then it could be possible to shear off like that.

    Just my thoughts.
