Excalibur silence
« on: December 17, 2011, 15:36 »
Hi anyone out there thats had an Excal 11 had any troubles with it?? Mine is only 6 months old and took it out for a hunt today, it made  a couple of clicking sounds and then silence.  Thought it might be the batteries, but still nothing, after charging it for a couple of hours. :( Not happy.  Any ideas as what it could be??

I would use a multi meter but if you dont have one try a 976p (9v that goes in smoke detectors) battery or something with low voltage and put one terminal on the main part of the headphone plug and try and touch the other part of the battery to a different terminal. This should make the speaker in the head phones click.  Simpler way is to go to a shop that sells headphones new or second hand and try another set.

Excal phones are hard wired. Sounds like a dud battery to me, and they're expensive to replace. Send it back to Minelab if it's still under warranty.

Only comes with one rechargeable battery pack, though i think you can purchase a backup one,  not sure if the backup is totally waterproof. Might have to see Gympie detectors on monday, and see if they can look at it for me, see if another battery pack will work. The only thing i dont like about it, is everything is fixed on this machine, coil, and headphones and only comes with one battery. Cant change headphones, cant change coils. Cause its fully waterproof.  Thanks for the offer devildave, might take you up on that loan, if its going to be a while. Otherwise i will go crazy over Christmas. LOL

This happened to me sometime back, had the battery on charge all night, hit the beach the next day and the same thing you said happened,it made a couple of clicking sounds and then silence.I sent the hole unit back to minelab to find out it was a dud batterk like Werewolf said.
P.S Just somethings, did you had rubber seal on the plug which goes into the battery and screwed up tight and was it in the water when you turned it on.If the rubber seal is U/S and water gets in it will short out the battery and the battery will flat in seconds.
    hope this help  :)

Hi Downunder, thanks for your input on this, interesting to know you had same problem. I think werewolf is right on this, can only hope its battery as i dont want the controls to be stuffed. :( :(. I was only hunting infront of a school on nature strip, not in water at the beach. Have already checked it out for leakages, but its' all good there and i always make sure the connection to battery is done up tight before going anywhere near the beach. And i always take good care of it and spray with silicone spray after water use.  Ahhhhhhhh well, I have to say in the last 6 months, i have probably used it for 4 hrs nearly every day since buying it. So i have given the battery a work out lol.

Downunder, how long did Minelab have your machine for, till you got it back? I'm hoping its not going to be weeks. But because of Christmas, it probably will be.

Hi toecutta, i did work out for myself what the problem was, It's the black lead that goes from the battery pack to the main board of controls. Not connecting properly. So i taped it into postion where the connection worked with some electrical tape, cause i wanted it over the new year. The battery itself was fine. Lucky for me, i managed to get it working, as i cleaned up over the new year break. I would have missed out on a few jobs and 23grams of gold from the sea. ;D I really dont want to have to live without it for 4 weeks.

    Hey there GG,
I would certainly get a second battery pack and they are fully submersible or you can buy the just the std waterproof casing which is not recommended for underwater use.
I would go for the totally waterproof one, a bit pricey but well worth it. I should be heading back up to the Sunshine coast for a hunt soon, the inlaws live on Buderim mountain
and it is a great place to be. Plenty of places to hunt.
Good to see the machine is up and running, now go get some gold mate.
    Cheers and HH

Hi Aushunter, i did buy a backup battery recently, the fully waterproof one.  Thanks for the advice. Let me know when you are around, i might see you out and about. Would be interesting to see another excalibur  here on the coast. I've only ever seen one other, besides mine. I'm sure they are about though. :D
