can 750 be plated?
« on: December 17, 2011, 19:21 »
I didn't find this detecting, I noticed it in a bag of jewellery at a market. I picked up a gold tooth, several marked plated bits of jewellery and this little item that grabbed my attention pretty quickly. It is marked 0750 but I can't imagine it is solid as well it weighs 2oz. So my question is do they mark plated jewellery with 0750?

oh, sorry for the white ballance, I took this indoors, but it is the appropriate colour

cheers, shaun.

yeah, I know it is 18kt, but do they mark plated stuff? I guess I am asking did I just find a $5 piece of jewellery or a $2500 one?

    cheers

If it was plated then it would probably have a mark like "lined", "gp" or "rg".  Check with a magnet, if it doesnt stick it still might be gold.  If it only going to be scrapped you could put a deep scratch in it to see what lies beneath.
My vote is 18k of sweet gold.

Correct me if im wrong, but isn't like white gold just ordinary gold with a coating of rhodium? Could something similar be going on here?

those dimensions would give you over 200 grams of gold
but on the plus side. that is from the dimensions only with no air gaps
that's exactly why Archimedes shouted Eureka (or something)
you have all the tools need to do a density test at home if you get restless.
and another plus is that no one would want to wear a 200 gram bracelet so I vote for gold still
    Good luck

Good point about the air gaps, but I think it doesn't add up. Will have someone look at it on Monday. Still happy with the day though, and fingers crossed on this one.

Hi Parsec, I hate to dampen your spirit, but need to show you a couple of pics of a massive 18ct chain, stamped in 3 places on the chain and clasps, that i found detecting at the beginning of the year. I was sooooooooo dissappointed when the only gold i could see on it was a little piece of plating around the clasp. I thought i had found a $5000 18ct chain, but it was copper junk. Those market people generally know there gold, i have found, be very careful. I wish mine had been gold.  :-\
