Hello everyone,

I'm new to the site and metal detecting and thought I just say hi. I live in Perth and decided to buy a cheap metal detector to start me off..a bounty hunter Tracker IV which I have had for about a week now. I've jumped straight in and been out a couple of times to test the unit, found some small stuff.. mainly at the beaches so far.

If all goes well I plan to invest in a waterproof unit for water detecting, I need to learn more about my new hobby first though :-)

Anyway I'm glad I found an Australian site!

    Hi Beachcomber
    Welcome aboard
The small things are harder to find than bigger, so your off to a good start, When you get more familiar with the sounds different objects make at different depths, you will really start opening up possibilities.
When I get a new detector, I practice in the back yard or better still down the local beach, if that's where I intend to use it most.
Sweep over some coins, chains, and a ring or two and listen, both at surface level and underground.
Placing them on edge as well gives sounds that are quite different, but my point is, practice, practice, practice.
Time spent learning the capabilities of your machine converts into valuable time saved so that more good targets are recovered than bad.
    Good luck

Thanks guys, will let you know how I go!

Actually I just came back from the beach, nothing but bottle tops..it was high tide but I couldn't help myself, I had to go and try the dry sand. I am in need of a sand scoop so I can get in the water, can't believe how expensive they are for a metal one but they do look the goods (ozsccop)

    Welcome Beachcomber!
Meggie's our expert user of the Bounty Hunter, had some great finds! Just be careful at the beach not to get the controls box wet and always give the md a good wash/wipe down with fresh water after use.
I got the MHOZ sand scoop at Christmas...so my kids have laid claim to the first two gold rings I find. :D

    Cheers

    Hi Red,

I was also looking at the MHOZ but it's damm expensive (although all scoops seem to be) I'm in the process of making a homemade scoop and maybe if I find enough stuff I can afford to buy the LHOZ
