Ace 250 Jewelry mode
« on: January 28, 2012, 01:29 »
Just to get use to things i made myself a chart that i could refer to during detecting.
Im not totally sure if this is correct, but these are the reading im coming up with in my testing. So far its worked out ok for me in my first few times out detecting. Criticism and feed back on my results would be good.

Modes and settings as shown, except depth.

I have never used an Ace so i am wondering what is the short and long. Is that the length of the beep ?

hi GH.  WHEW, DUNO. i have an ace 350, sure is different to the BH discovery 3300. the bh seems to be more point and go. i got the ace mainly for the  dd coil and the 8.7?khz.  guess i need to learn the ace.  so far the bh is as good, mbe better. easier to use.the U.S.A. reviews for the 250/350are great.so are the 3300. both are good units. depth seems the same. i can,t help thinking it,s not  deep enough to find the good stuff. i think that i have to find better sites, and do a comparision. 8)

Yeh its the beep Rwork. I even think there could be a medium beep with the 20c & 50c but it varied.

One thing i did learn that i wasnt aware of, the Ace 250 was not able to detect high quality Stainless Steel. I did get strange reactions at very close range but nothing stable.
However, low quality SS containing traces of iron gave a reading.

Im going to do some other materials a little later on.
All testing was done in soft soil to clay.

looks not bad but a lot depends on how the coins is facing and the soil it is in, one and 2 dollars coins are easy to recognise after a while an 50 cent coins give a funny signal I'm still finding out the tones on the at pro as some are the same as the aces but others are a different tone
I'm glad you are doing air testing as this is vital to get your ear in but somethings will still fool you especially crown seals cant wait to see your first finds and a few awards on the forum what type of detecting are you going to do most of mine so far has been the beach but going into parks soon
repeatability is the key you will get a lot of signals that give a tone but as you sweep back they don't sound and i ignore most of these you need a signal they gives you a tone as you sweep both ways so when you do little sweeps they give a signal easy to pin point
if it is hard to pin point it is usually trash
if you can get to a beach to hone your skills makes it easier later as digging trash on the beach is easier than in parks and hard ground etc

Groundbangers i've found that the 250 is an excellent machine and that the signals given in the ground are different to air testing. Having said that crusty coins give weird signals, coins on edge give weird signals, and gold jewellery is roughly as you indicate although chunky rings can sound off just below where a dollar coin sounds off but without the belltone. Basicallt the trick is to spend time on the ground and learn the sounds the machine makes. Having said that I recently dug a couple of dollar coins at the beach that were crusty and about 6 to 8 inches down that sounded off just above the iron tone. With time though you will instinctively know the one and two dollar coin tones as they are distinctive in tone and length of tone.

All the testing was done on actual coins that i had dug up while detecting at the school where i work. It was done over a 4 hour period. I documented the reading and tone on the Ace before i dug and recorded the reading after the coin was found. Roughly the first 3" was a dark soil similar to top soil and below that was clay, some very dry and hard. Yes, some tones were different. I just took the the most popular tone and position on the panel, then recorded it as shown on the diagram. Id imagine different soils will give different reading. My finding are just based on what ive come across so far. I did manage to take $55.21 in coins and two small gold rings in that 4-5 hours. I was stoked! I still have a little more ground to cover there which will probably be tomorrow arvo.
I dug up everything, tiny bits of foil, old milk bottle tops, cans, bolts and broken toy parts. I dont think ill find and pre decimal coins given the school is only 53 years old, but thats ok, just being able to take my time learning the machine there is a bonus, and its only across the road. I did manage to coax a couple of other schools into letting me wonder about.
Many thanks Trevor for a fun machine. Even a good set of batteries that lasted me 2 outings, that was a bonus, i know you didnt have to do that. Still so much to learn.
