Frustrated already
« on: February 04, 2012, 15:56 »
Cracked it big time today, 2 hours swing time and ive got a massive collection of rusty bottlecaps, weird aluminium bits (mowed cans??)  and ring pulls (got a bent one at 8-9 inches! depth isnt a problem lol)  real problem is they take such a long time to find using the 11" coil pinpoint function.

bandaid solution - just bought a garrett propointer  ;D

proper solution - need someone to teach me how to use this silly stick!  ::)

Most of those targets will always fool most detectors. Ihave an 8 inch coil on one detector that is very easy to pinpoint with.
The pro pointer was a wise investment.

set up a test dig area in your back yard.  make sure it is free from trash before you start.   place different coins and objects at different levels and have a practice.

this hobby is just like any other you need some proper training before you start and get too frustrated with the 'silly stick'.

Practice Practice practice, it didn't take me long to get the 350 pinpointing down pat. Found it to be very accurate.

Sosage, the secret to success in anything is determination and not giving up. I hear what you are saying, when I started fossicking 25 odd years ago I was filled with visions of untold wealth leaping out of the ground at me. The reality was me finding pyrites and learning the hard way that finding treasure is hard work and that knowledge and experience is more important than having all the fancy gear.

You have got a good machine in the ACE350. I can only suggest what everyone is saying and that is practice and time. Learn your machine and dig every target. Find a few parks or beaches and just keep going over them and dig every target till you understand what the machine is telling you is under the coil. Getting someone to 'teach' you is helpful but it isn't going to give you the knowledge that comes with experience.

When you start finding worthwhile stuff it will vindicate all the crap targets you have dug. However you should remember that you are going to dig a lot of crap even after you are experienced.

I guess that it doesn't help to read of all the finds other members have on this forum, but remember that we all dig ebough trash to open our own collective recycling yard!

    ahhh the good old can-slaw.
(cans that have been slashed by a mower.)
It just takes time and you will get it.
As mick said, even the pro's dig junk!
Also remember you will only find it if it is there.
    Good luck and happy hunting.
