$5 coin
« on: February 06, 2012, 22:17 »
Hi all just around at my parents to pick some stuff up, when my step dad was looking for something he pulled a box out the cupboard and said this is my coin collection. When I asked if I could have a look seeing that now I am into detecting I am interested more in coins than previously he said be my guest.
So I lifted the lid and there on top in a plastic bag were three very big gold coins that had $5 on them, made in 1988. I didn't even know they made them so at first I though they were fake. ( hmmm just imagine if they were in circulation ).

Just thought I would share that with you all. See you do learn something everyday.

All they need now is to mint a .95 or .99cent coin lol, seeing as everything ends with 95 or 99 cents

I would rather dig up one of the Aussie $200 coins.. my great great aunt sent me one for my 21st via regular post. When it reached me it had nearly worn through the envelope :o it also had one of those $5 jobs with it.

Had a $5 coin in change once.  Needed petrol a few days later and all I had was that damn coin. Should have walked the 20km home.  Doh!!

Back then $5 bought about 10 litres.

A $5 coin for the 75th commemoration of the landing at Gallipoli came out I guess in 1990. Anyhow, as you could get them from the bank at face value, I bought 20 of them and spent them around town just to watch people's reaction. I suppose they were all kept as souvenirs or ended up back at the bank again. No-one ever gave me one in change, though I did get a current New Zealand 50 cents this morning pretending to be an Aussie 10 cents.
