Water Tectin
« on: February 09, 2010, 17:47 »
Gday all
I went for a look down the local beach last night,, Lovely night, calm and warm.. and i thought bugger it,i might have a look in the water. Now i have never tried this before but i have read on here about it.. The tide was coming in so i wasnt in for long ,but there was loads of targets.
I only chose to dig a couple, 1 was 1$ coin badly corroded and other was a sinker.. One i left in water because i couldnt get the dam thing in the scoop :-\.

Which brings me to ask,, Is there any tips, tricks to use once you have pinpointed,I placed my foot behind coil once i had it pinpointed and then scooped in front of my foot. Then moved scoop and went over my hole to see if it was still there.

Also do you use one of those floating tubs etc to empty scoop in once you have target. ?

Took home the Trac and gave it a good wash, and i am thinking of using  armoural on the shafts for some protection. I also use some putty at work we lovingly call (dogshit) which is a moisture and electrical sealer that wont dry out and can easily be removed on the bottom shaft where coil wire enters to help stop water travelling up centre of tube.
Ok those who know me would say this is a marathon post for me so i will shutup for now  :)

Thanks for listening :P

hi there i usually get right in the water with a mask & snorkel & fan the targets out, the other way i do it is when i find a targets i fan some of the sand away with my foot then pinpoint when I'm pinpointed with the coil dead center i put the scoop behind the coil move the coil then scoop, it can be quite noisy way to do it but it works. so0me times with the foot behind the coil way you'll miss the target due to having the scoop on the wrong angle.

Thanks Lazy i am doin it that way ,, finding plenty of sinkers etc,, few goldies..

I am using silicone spray on the tector ,, seems to give it good protection,, just spray on rag and wipe it down..

Gonna need a new scoop tho,, one i got is a bit small and i bent it  :-\

Hope you Etrac is out of warranty Clarrie, or the personal alterations may make it invalid.
The md's designed for water hunting eg Excalibur's, PI's can be leathered and allows use of two hands if needed.  Where as, you have to be extremely careful not to get the controls wet!

Now I've heard fishermen tell of the one that got away, but it must have been a coin embedded in something huge to bend a scoop! :)   There are some floating sifters on youtube mostly home made and I guess it depends on the type waters you are hunting as to whether they would be of real benefit to you. (...another thing to drag out of the car)
    Cheers

    Gday Red

I hope just wiping down the thing doesn't void warranty.. Thats all i have done atm, The beach where i am has a area that at low tide is about a foot deep, so i dont go very deep.I tie a rope on it up to my shoulders for the (woops factor)

I am thinkin of waterproof one but  i dont think i need it with what i am doing.

I have thought of the sifter , but as you said it's anotherthing to have in the car, so i can do without it. :)

Clarrie, Do you also cover the control box for the whoopsie factor? Even a plastic bag is some protection.
I was just thinking, have you tried changing hands in using scoop and md?
I'm naturally righthanded and would use a shovel with my right, but I tended to use my md in my right. It's actually easier for me to sweep with the left and scoop with the right. Better balanced and control.
If your scoop isn't too bent and you are hunting the shallows, you may only need a bit of ajustment and practise.  Mine is 9"x5"diam. with a 29 1/2" handle. Fine for up to knee high wading and beach but if I get more adventurous I'd need a wet suit and longer scoop.

    Cheers

I will try changing hands Red,, Never thought of that. When i first started gold prospecting i was swingin left handed , but i use my right now as it feels more natural for me..
I have the stock box cover on and thats all. I dont use earphones , prefer to use speaker . Less for me to get tangled up in :)

The scoop is a small one , it has bent backinto shape no probs, I am going to look at getting a bigger one , one of the OZ ones or one from Millsey's not too sure which yet. Going to Wedderburn in March and i will call in and have a look at his..
