Besides from requiring a 1.5 Volt AA cell to function, it is not a multimeter, but like a multimeter it is used by those who want/need to know beyond guessing.

It is shown in use and how/why it is useful, info can be found in two other parts of this forum.

Normally I would not test suss, fake, custom jewellery, but since you asked.

If the item is new and the coating intact and thick enough, then it can give a reading of that carat, but if coating is broken/penetrated then the reading will be at the border of the Red/Yellow area on the left side of the scale, showing it has little preciousness or value for a retirement fund.
