Wotsit 1 and 2?
« on: October 23, 2017, 16:54 »
Hi all you experts out there.

I've just had a week in the Southern Highlands on a gold detecting trip, but did a fair bit of treasure-hunting as well.

I have a couple of objects I have no idea about. My best guesses are a furniture fitting (the 3-long brass thing) and a tip off a cane/riding crop or similar. I thought Wotsit2 was a thimble when it popped out, so that will give you size and shape.

Can anyone shed any light on these? Thanks in advance

Wotsit 2 looks like an umbrella tip.

Wotsit1 could be part of a tiered item like a cake stand. Is there a hole in the base which could secure it to something underneath?

Detectist, Wotsit 1 has a screw thread on the right hand end, and a hole at the other end, so what you say makes sense.

Wotsit 2 could be an umbrella tip. It is complete so it is also the same on the other side, and it would have a diameter of 16mm at the large end if not squashed.

A big part of detecting is being in the right place - in your head and at the site.
