ID for maker of Diecast truck needed
« on: December 02, 2017, 19:49 »
Just wondering if there are any toy experts that can ID this truck for me. It is very small at 5cm long by 18mm wide. I think it is meant to be a fire truck going by the red colour and the method of attaching the axles could be the one way of identifying the maker.

A big part of detecting is being in the right place - in your head and at the site.

Hi All

That is an Australian made Tuckerbox Toy Fire Engine. Manufactured in Melbourne in the 1950's and marketed by Alex Tolmer (later to become Toltoys). The die for this model and others later were sold into New Zealand and the models continued to be made in the 1960's.

References include my own site
Tonys Toys : Tuckerbox Models  (except I do not yet own a Fire Engine :-(

and Robert Newsome : Matchbox Downunder which includes images of the Fire Engine.

I wonder if we have Tony listed in our Resource section. It is being changed around at the moment but the site might be worth linking in Resources.

Thanks Tony, I knew the forum would come up trumps, I did search your site but got lost in the amount of photos you had and was concentrating too much on a fire truck that wasn't there, so much so that I missed the underside shots showing the lack of brand and method of holding the axles.

Hi

Those dies are probably in scrap in Christchurch NZ following the earthquakes over there a few years back, if they were not completely worn out and scrapped many years earlier.

Some of the dies were used for the Lincoln Matchbox Series models in the 1960's which Matchbox UK challenged and they were subsequently rebranded.

The New Zealand government had an embargo on importing finished goods in the 1960's and as a result the manufacturers there purchased dies and unfinished product parts from Australian makers for a number of years, hence Micro Models (ex Melbourne), Brentoys/Brentware, Tuckerbox, dies and parts, etc. all ended up in New Zealand.
