What's your favourite coin spill and why?
« on: April 26, 2018, 20:35 »
I have two.  One predecimal, one decimal.

The predecimal spill had 7 coins in it, the youngest being an 1858 penny.  The remaining coins were half pennies, 5 Queen Victoria (2 x 1853, 3 x 1857) and one King George III.  The King George III was so worn I couldn't get a date off it.  I've actually had three spills of 7 predecimal coins, bit this is my favourite because these coins are older than the others.

The decimal coin spill had over 200 coins in it, ranging from 1c coins to 20c coins.  My best guess is this was a pilfered change box where all the high value stuff was pocketed and the low value stuff tossed.  I spent the best part of an hour on a 40 degree C day unearthing that spill.  I was so knackered I left knowing there were still coins in the ground.  Had they been predecimals though I probably would have stayed... ;)  This is a favourite simply because of the sheer volume of coins.

Nothing big, but I found two sixpences (1916 and 1897) in one hole at a park a few months back. Also a few months ago I found a spill of two florins ('42 and '46) and two halfpennies. [/img][/img]

Nice!

Silver spills are always good.  Especially when 1800s are involved :)

Florin, Shilling, Sixpence and threepence all on top of each other.

Found in an old caravan park site that was flooded out and moved in the 1970's I believe.
Loved it because until that point I had found about 70 1 and 2 cent pieces in little clumps all over the place. My guess is the washing line area's.

Right on the edge of the mown grass I jammed the coil into the longer stuff about half a coil width and the Deus gave me the sweetest yet weirdest High tone I have heard. Didn't even pinpoint or anything Just bent down dug the hole, sandy loam so very easy, and was surprised with the 4 coins in a neat little stack about 3 inches down.

Haven't found any other pre-dec coins on this site and the brown bugga count is well over 120. They must be there somewhere though?????????

Happy Hunting

For me its probably the Coin Spill i pulled during the token hunt at Laanecoorie last year containing 2 3d's, a 6d and a 1907 shilling (my first larger english silver). Cant believe that no one found them over the hundred years or so they've been there, especially considering how hard that areas been hit.

curious to know how the deus responded graphically - were you running the xy screen by any chance?  I much prefer the XY to the horseshoe.

Here is a decimal hunt this morning 2.5m x 1.2m area , the 2 ,20cent pieces were 2 inches down ,
so not part of the coin scatter as i think of it , but the rest were in the grass or on the dirt .
Certainly my best spill / scatter that's for sure.

Cheers.

My favourite coin spill was found by someone else. A lady was told that the area around an old racetrack in The Golden Triangle was going to become a Park rather than the forest it was. She had a look and found what must have been an old spill of 6 Half Sovs. I have the picture at work and will add if i remember on Monday.

Don't have a pic, it was yolks ago, bit I found over 70 ha'pennys in an area probably only 30 x 30 foot.  Was on a slope overlooking an old oval and assume it was the fruit/refreshment stand.
