Copper beach find
« on: April 26, 2018, 21:06 »
Found what looked like a plain piece of sheet copper on the beach and was about to throw it in the scrap bucket when i noticed a couple of shallow patterns on one side . I have used some emery cloth on a flat file to shine up the high points which has revealed two pictures that i couldn't make out before . It's got me stumped what it's from , any ideas from the brains trust ?

It looks like an old-fashioned matchbox holder.

Thanks for the replies all . Looks like matches/smoking is the likely use , which is something i hadn't thought of at all . It will now go into my bucket of beach curios instead of scrap .

If you’re careful, you may be able to bend it back to its original shape. In the old days there were all manner of matchbox holders, cigarette and tobacco pouches. Ladies, especially, liked to accessorise their smokes, matches and lighters. In particular, they used cigarette holders, to avoid nicotine stains on their fingers.  Quite posh, really.
