Hi from Darwin
« on: January 15, 2011, 15:57 »
New member here, getting back into detecting after a few years break and look forward to reading and viewing posts on this forum. Currently have a couple of  Tesoro units that I use. I mainly hunt parks, sports grounds, old abandoned air fields and miltary sites which are fairly common around the Darwin district. One thing I have noticed up this way there is not many others swinging coils. Any way take care all.

Welcome Backlash. Good to see someone from the Top End around here. Not many people swinging there hey? I thought the same here for a while. Then while talking to friends about my new hobby, some would say "yeah i saw a guy here and I saw a guy there". I guess in smaller cities, not many detectorists get the chance to be at the same place at the same time.

But you'd be surprised at just how many others there are around you who are into the same hobby.

Anyway, show us your finds soon!

Cheers
Snoopy

Backlash,i suppose you get used to humidity up there.Down here in Vic its just stopped raining for the first time in 2 weeks.Very humid here, around 95%.Rochester just had a flood and the river at Echuca where willy46 and Daz are is coming up next.(not a flash flood though)We are down river a bit further.I suppose you know when the afternoon showers are and do your detecting beforehand.  Rwork

G'day Backlash and welcome. The Top End home of the Whole Pacific US Army During the Second World War
With the amount of bases that where built to house Australian and US Army  and Airforce equipment I would have thought that metal detecting sites up there would be plentiful. Now especially as most of them are abandoned. Hope to see some great war relics as well as Aussie and Yank coins over the coming months
Metal Detectorists are like cars, you never see any till you buy one. I bought a Hyundai Terracan as I hadn't see many on the road, Now they are everywhere

Hi and welcome Backlash. You're lucky not having many other 'swingers' up there - more finds for you  ;). It's been a few years since I've visited Darwin. I was stationed up there with the Defence Force in the 80s. No doubt it has changed a bit. Looking forward to seeing you post some finds.

Hi Backlash,

The military sites up your way sound like a bit of a challenge...all the more exciting when the good finds re-surface eh?!..Hope to see a picture or 2 on your next forum entry...and by all means, give the Tesoro a good write-up ;)  :D  ;)

Folklore has it that somewhere up there the Chinese used to traid with the locals at a particular place every year. I guess gold may have been part of the trades ? Anyone heard of this story. From memory it was NW of darwin

G-Day Backlash, if you happen to come across any brass bullet casings (up to & including 20mm), I would be interested to see them, the Japs strafed Darwin & a few airfields down Sth. the empty casings & link from aircraft cannon should have been ejected, but I have yet to see a Jap example, seen plenty of bomb splinters & allied ammo tho. Any one else reading this can also participate as well, I can ID just about anything in that line, thank you. Regards Bullethead.
