garrett pro pointer?
« on: May 18, 2014, 12:16 »
the garrett pro pointer, costs at purchase $199.00 for a two year warranty, but begins to fail from six months to a year after purchase.what do you  do then, send it back and get a new one.i think not!it's got to be your fault, you turned it on.when you buy these things you hope it's going to last out the warranty.but no they don't.this is my forth one,i have 8 years warranty owing to me and only been four years detecting.what a rip off by garrett.now i have started to revert back to the pre garrett pro pointer to the metal detector target pointer, slower it may be but it works.emubob

Garrett and Minelab , both seem to have the same bad reps , the new player in the game Whites TRX , seems to be the winner so far ,  will be my next choice  " when "  mine fails .

I have had two replaced not a problem. I even pulled one apart and tried to fix it and they had no problem replacing it! I must admit the qualities a bit hit and miss but I have always had good service. What did they say to you when you tried to return one?

a month or two after i bought the last one it started playing up.the dealer agreed something was wrong and sent it south to phil, who performed his magic and made it work properly.it did work properly for about a year, but gradually it started to give false signals.press start and sometimes it won't shut up.switching it on and off repeatedly sometimes helps to bring it back to normal.not real sure but i think it maybe just out warranty.i won't be buying another one.emubob

Worked on a few and a number of assumptions and some traps can catch people out..
When you have had a gut full of it... Send it to me and I will do my magic and we can see what you think afterwards..

Comes down to how you deal with your warranty repair. I know of a case where ML wouldn't replace a ctx coil less than a year old. But I sent mine back after telling them the issue and I was sent two caps back as well as my coil within 4 days of sending it . It comes down to how you deal with it, I always call , I always tell them the issue before I send it , it makes sense to be polite, but makes sense for the supplier to make Thier customer happy .

I have had my Pro Pointer since they were first released and it is still working fine.
Maybe quality control collapsed for  later items.

I have had my Pro Pointer since they were first released and it is still working fine. Maybe quality control collapsed for later items.
The will always be a spread of  users and units that may not be 100%.   But if one abuses and or drops in the drink or causes some other damage; then one can not expect the manufacturer to fully replace under warranty.

Yet from experience I have seen people attempt the impossible and do not understand just how easy it is for a good tec to determine the cause.

If I had a pro-pointer that failed after two years, in a manner that clearly showed a manufacturing fault ie. Case not showing signs of  of being run over but was fracturing at a mould joint = Under Australian LAW then that could well be a warranty call.

A coil fails at the strain relief = harder call.  Manufacturing issue or  excessive / misuse
A coil fractures and breaks... The condition of the coil and the nature of the fracture have to be carefully looked at. It could be a Manufacture fault or excessive use.

All good manufacturers like to see many of the faults first had so that they can feed back to the raw product supply as to a possible defect in a run etc   PROBLEM is that if it is not a manufacture / warranty fault, you often do not get YOUR item back and you still have to get a replacement.

WARNING...  Always get the serial number of an HDD when you send your PC into repair / service.
If the repair requires you to have the HDD replaced, GET YOUR ORIGINAL BACK.

Do NOT leave it for the repair shop to dispose of...

Many a so called faulty HDD, are not dead and can just have a corruption etc.  I recover data and once bought a stack of DEAD  HDD units from a auction, from a repair place...  Bank accounts / Passwords / Personal Data / lots of MUSIC and of course some interesting home Pics and Videos.....  Could have been embarrassing for a number of people...

Same for any Metal Detector with USB and GPS info...  It is your private data and you need to manage it..
If I had to repair a high end unit that some one had been finding lots of Gold or treasure - what is to stop me from downloading the logs :-)

DO NOT ASSUME EVERY ONE HAS MORALS AND ETHICS.
