Sun Ray Pro Headphones for CTX 3030
« on: March 25, 2016, 08:40 »
Hello,

I've recently purchased a set of these headphones for the 3030.  I went through 3 sets of the cheap made Minelab Koss standard headphones.  I like the sound of the Koss ones but the design was prone to failure.  Not really designed for outdoor detecting as the cord was always fraying from use.  I saw a review of the Sun Rays and decided to invest in a set.  I've used them now on 3 outings and can say they were a  worthy purchase.  The jack is sturdy and L shaped which alleviates the issue with cord fraying.  Each earpiece has separate volume control also.  The headset is sturdy.  The headstrap on the cheap Koss ones was always breaking.  The one con I can think of is they might be a bit tight on the head and you can hardly hear outside noise.  Good thing the new  Garret 'carrot' pinpointer has a strong vibration feature.

This Sun Ray model is specially designed for the CTX and is specific when ordering.  Sun Ray Pro Gold (CTX 3030) Headphones.  They were purchased from the Serious_Detecting shop on Ebay.  Received them in a week and only payed $24 US for shipping.  Total $154 US.   Cheaper option than the Grey Ghost CTX version.    I think most know that I don't try and flog a product because of brand name.  I use what works for me.  I have a Minelab detector, Whites find bag, Sun Ray headphones, CoilTec coil and a Garrett pinpointer.  Guess you can say I'm multi brand  conscious!

So Dutchy, they have the 3030 connector that plugs directly into the back of them.  Is that correct?

The connector is built into the earphones.  There is a switch on the side of one of the earpieces that enable the use of the 3030.

Sunray make the Pro Golds in two versions so make sure if you're buying them for thr CTX that you order the CTX specific version. It's usually well advertised if they are specifically for the CTX, but best to check before you order. I have the other version (bought for a different detector) and the only way they will work on the CTX (along with other non CTX specific HP's) is with an adaptor, or by using the WM10 module. They are excellent headphones, with very good outside noise reduction.

If you need to re-wire for the CTX3030 ML have a guide.

But you also need to understand how the HeadPhones are configured.

PS. Remember - Un- Less the Headphones have their own power; any volume control other than MAX is just dumping audio power via a dropping resistor.  So not very efficient.

See page 2 and 3 for the detail.
