My AT is very unwell.
« on: May 02, 2016, 16:37 »
G'day all.
After taking the summer off from detecting, I got cranked up again a few weeks back with the cooler weather and have been going along steadily with a few nice bits accumulating slowly but surely.
Until today :-\
My much-loved AT has decided not to play!
The sequence of events.

I was using it on Fri when the batteries went flat (expected) Changed to another set of rechargeables, but it wouldn't start up. Assumed I'd forgotten to charge the spare set.

Charged both sets over the weekend and went out today, Went to switch on and got the usual "Beep" then nothing. Changed batteries again and got the same.

I noticed that if I hold the ON button long enough I got the double beep, followed by the display coming up very very dimly. I noticed that the mode function works in this state. The others may, or the thing just shuts down when you hit a button.

There's nothing from the coil at all.

I've swapped batteries, swapped coils from the Hunter to the stock 8x5 but neither has helped.

Has anyone got any suggestions? Is there anyone in SA who does decent Garrett repairs?

Ta

Have you tried off the shelf, ready to go batteries? (i.e.  already charged)

Not as yet. Might go get some and see what happens.

These guys are the SA dealer for Garrett, hopefully they can help out if batteries aren't the issue.  More than likely it will have to be shipped off the Brisbane for trouble shooting/repairs.

WOOT!
The batteries were the problem!
I kinda dismissed the batteries as they're 2 sets of good quality Vapex nicads that wouldn't have had more than a dozen recharges.  I suspect the charger may be the issue as it's older than god.
Thank gawd for that! Currently having a blast detecting and the idea of not having the AT to play with for a few weeks was a huge bummer!
Thanks for the help peeps!

Its always nice when its a nice and simple solution. Am I the only one who doesn't worry with rechargeable batteries for my AT Pro and just use cheap shop brought batteries?

I used them when I started detecting but switched over to nicads.  I use rechargeables for all manner of stuff without issues.

I think the issue I had was down to the charger rather than the batteries. I reckon the chance of two sets of batteries dying on the one day is pretty remote.

I'll keep a set of cheapies in the car just in case and give the charger the heave.

The main thing is my machine works, and I wont get caught like that again. ;D
