Made it Myself.
« on: March 03, 2012, 13:11 »
MADE IT MYSELF PROJECTS CAN BE ADDED TO THE END OF THIS POST. Rwork

Ok, so I broke my old faithful digger yestiddy, so I headed to runnings this morning to get a new doorknob and to check out a new digging tool.
Nothing they had really got my juices flowing or looked durable enough so I headed back home and hit the shed to make my own.
I had an old flexplate off a gearbox sitting around so out came the grinder and cutting discs.
in conjunction with an old bike handgrip this is what I came up with.
gina head out now to test it.

I think you will need a gussett on the bend for when you use it as a lever. Digging and probing should be ok.

Ill add one if needs be, its 4mm steel and bloody hard to bend.
I did think about that though.

Have you got a press?

Make up a tool like the attachment and you will be able to make simple bends, such as a kink in that blade. You would be surprised how little force it takes in a jig like this to bend some steel.

thought about it ben, but  i dont own a press.  instead i ran a cut off disc up the middle and then bent the blade into a slight 'v' shape then ran the mig up it, ground it down, voila!
went outside, dug a plug, give it the old leverado and it didnt even budge.
quite happy with the end result.

Great work Pepper.  Not that you need an excuse to go detecting, but I'm sure the new digger needs a field test  ;D.

Another episode of self inspired home innovation from the shed.
Lethal weapon #0# starring Mr pepper the maker himself..............(no small business or spice girls came to harm in this production)

I happen to applaud shed and home innovations of all variety be it functional as tools or gadgets, or wearable as jewellery.

To prevent ideas of this nature being scattered and lost, I would again suggest a "DIY Project" section or child board in the Detector Accessories area for ease of access and future additions.

A good deal of excellent home projects have been submitted to this forum and may still be here somewhere awaiting a common address.

Innovations come from talent the two should never be separated and scattered.

Yep that'll do it too! Another thing that may help, if you have a stick welder is to grab some hardface rods from a engineering supplier and run a bead along the back of the blade. Will give a real nice high tensile spine to the tool.

I have some 5mm 316 stainless in the shed, after seeing this knife I might knock something up myself!

Looks solid enough Moose 61. The lesche have a couple of small braces where yours is welded, it will be a good test of your welding.

Cheap pointer lanyard, I used an old small diameter cb radio mike cord, electrical terminals, small dog clasp, and piece of aluminum cut out for the pointer base works great.
