Title: Member List
Post by: Count Pierre on January 12, 2018, 03:52
Clegy,

I can't seem to find the Forum Member List.

Has it been removed?

It was very handy if you wanted to contact a member who hadn't posted for some time, or if you simply wanted to look up a member.

It has been mentioned before but no answer was given. It still shows for Mods but i don’t know why members cannot view it. I think it should only be available to those who have a few posts so we don’t have spammers using it.

Hi Pete.  A lot has changed since the 'upgrade' and I, for one, am still getting used to it.  Accessing the member list, again, would be great.  Even if it's restricted to members with a minimum number of posts, to stop trolling.  As it is, we have to read through posts to find a member we want to contact.  But that still is a way of doing it and, I guess, trolls could do the same anyway.

Justin has forecast a lot of changes in the near future and maybe he is waiting until that is sorted before re-visiting changes made late last year?

To Find a member Just use the search facility, under advanced search you can search by member name easily.

I'll look at the permissions, but opening the members list opens it to bots that can grab all the emails and start spamming you. Remember last year a few people got all hyped up about spam messages, that was the reason it happened as the permissions where changed for a very brief time.

As for sweeping changes, there may be one more when we change server later in the year. I postponed it as my plate is full and I have set aside $5,000 for forum prizes this year so funds for the place are at an all time low. I draw the line at -5k LOL.

So Lets see what happens with the new competition when its launched and see if the place can get a little boost with some fresh members and hopefully a few old faces coming back.

Take care and please ask any questions.

It have never been safe/secure to LEND pictures of finds to a forum with so many none "0" posting members that apparently are here only to obtain free info or do their ?? business via unchecked PM.
It's even worse now where the Lenders of the pictures are denied their return.
Imagine how many none posting members are here to fish for info on what detector you own, you finds where you find it and where you reside.

Member list is for more than to find members it's also used to see the "0" posting members hiding behind phony/fake names.

If you have a break in at your residence or car and get robbed the forum can be seen as an accomplished, if the info was obtained here !

I'm on the observation list  :police:  but not for doing name calling or using profane language. :-X

Be careful with what you post.

Below strips of posters/none posters from 10 pages of the members list.

Ivan isn’t on the “Watched” list any more.

We can't force people to be active, we can only encourage them.
So i pound them with ads until they have 10 posts, its the best I can really do short of charging a fee.

Yes there are a lot of Zero posters, but if you don't publish anything then they won't be able to ask you more questions.

Its a circle you need to choose to break, by sharing more, more people respond and it grows from there.

I'm hoping a new batch of members will help, I hope you do to Ivan,

Clegy

Thanks for the reply, Clegy.

The search box is probably the safest way to go.

I have my answer...8)

Try "Help" (main page) scroll down to "member list" ...and you will find......
"Provided that you have the appropriate permissions, you will be able to see the Members entry on the Main Menu (https://wiki.simplemachines.org/smf/Main_menu) or in the Info Center (https://wiki.simplemachines.org/smf/Info_center)

......  I hear what you are saying about "bots" and Spam Clergy......It was a great feature to be able to see who was actually involved in the forum, and those who was sitting on the sidelines....the newbies, and the oldies.....but I guess we have to go with the times....a bit like airport security
