If anyone can see a coin that i have missed let me know. Jacko was listed twice which is why one coin didn't seem to be included. I have just added an extra for raymondj.

This 1842 Groat was found in the Durakai GPA, near Warwick, Qld, in February 2016. It was near the surface and in a quite good readable condition.

Still no 1840. I wonder if it was a lower mintage than other years.

Thanks Happy Jack. I looked at reply 25 but he listed his finds after that post.
1836 seems to be the oldest Australian Groat find and 1860 is the newest. JohnUK has one listed from the 1500's.

  • Basically this thread would involve all our groat finds that we have made. Being a rare find in itself I think we all have a passion of finding one and adding it to our ever growing collection.

From the reigns of Charles II to George III, groats (by now often known as fourpences) were issued on an irregular basis for general circulation, the only years of mintage after 1786 being in 1792, 1795, and 1800. After this the only circulating issues were from 1836 to 1855, with proofs known from 1857 and 1862 and a colonial issue of 1888. These last coins had the weight further reduced to about 27 grains (1.9 grams) and were the same diameter as the silver threepenny pieces of the day although thicker. They also had Britannia on the reverse, while all other silver fourpenny pieces since the reign of William and Mary have had a crownednumeral "4" as the reverse, including the silver fourpenny Maundy money coins of the present. Some groats continued to circulate in Scotland until the 20th century.

I'll start it off with my two groat finds which where basically in the same vicinity located in a park dating back to the 1830's.

First one is dated 1847 and is badly worn. It was found at approximate 5" down and seems it was once warn as a pendant or good luck charm.

Second one is dated 1837 and is in reasonable good Nick for its age. Found around the 8" mark.

Hi Spanner thank for your info on groats  I have one given to me by my granny years ago but where it came from ?? its 1855 in about vf coin grade thanks again

Groat No.3 found 15-6-12
1860
its the design without Britannia
nsc

NSC's 1860 coin is actually  a 4 pence from a Maundy set..(Technically it is not a "groat"...they ceased in 1855)
