Thanks Ant. I have a good camera here but no way of getting it onto the iPad. iPhone picture will have to do until i can get home. Coin is an 1872 Half Sov, mintmark S. First i have found and i was surprised how small it was. Just looks like a sixpence only yellow. I was camped on private property at Maryborough but got annoyed with my 2 jack Russell's chasing kangaroos and rabbits and not coming back till it suited them. I went to the Simpson track diggings where i lost my wedding ring and had a look around. Finding the coin was a bit of karma as i walked over to an unfilled hole to kick some dirt in and got a small signal about a foot away. Thinking it would be a small nugget i really got into digging the rock hard ground with a large pick. Normal practice in the golden triangle is to dig as small a hole as possable due to the ground hardness. It's a wonder i didn't put the pick through the coin or even mark it.    Probably only another dozen coins to catch Detrackozi now.  :)

I had seen Full Sovs but never held, or found a Half Sov.before.  I didn't realise how small they were.We often see members gold coin finds but usually with nothing for a size comparison.

This is my 1925 sovereign. Found in June 2015 in the woodchips of a children's playground in Sydney (tot lot, is that what you call them?). Very shallow, and in good condition. Took a moment to realise that it wasn't a dollar. Maybe some kid borrowed it from their parent's collection. I realise how lucky a find it was, especially after only a couple weeks detecting. And I still haven't topped it.

Here is my 30-15 BC Celtic Gold quarter stater. Spink lists the coin as a bit earlier but further research seems to confirm the later date. Found on the 30/03/16 in Colchester England. It is classified as an Addedomaros type (cross shaped flower pattern). Addedomaros is recognised as the Celtic King in the south west of England during that period, though very little is known about him.

depends on ground condition and other factors but a general guide is:

Half Sov - 12-23/24 - the last one I found I thought it was a shirt button as it sounded just like the other buttons I had been digging around it..
Sov - 12-36/37

Just to add to the above for other type of detectors:

Haven't found a full sov so can't comment, however the half sov will come up on or about the TID for a 50c piece.

I waved the CTX over the 1845 Full Sovereign that appeared on the weekend just gone

Came up a solid 12.29 - ( Air test ) which is in the Gold range

As Sambo the half Sovereign comes in the 50c range - ie: 12.27 , 12.28

Certainly as Dutchy mentioned ground conditions can alter ID numbers ...!

I waved the little Ace 250 over the coin and it fluctuated through the gold range and slightly above. Ant had a large coil on the 3030. I had the standard small coil. Junker had his 705, coil unknown. None of us could hear the other target in the hole until i brought the 5000 over.
Stay tuned.

The date side of the coin (1845) shows general fine scratching and a scratch under the neck. A ding on the edge which looks like i pick hit. The other side is rated as Fairly Flash :). Found by a Bpc member at our Newstead outing. The other signal in the hole couldn't be heard by the coin machines but showed up with the 5000. It was a typical Miners button.
