About 2 1/2 inches long

I wonder if it used to have an insert for wax seals? Looks old.

Could it be some type off candle snuffer? May have had a handle attached to the loop as a pivot point.

Nice relic mate.By "string weight" I presume you mean something like a plumb bob Ant?..I think not..they are usually heavy solid brass and come down to a point. Just to keep the conversation ticking along..I wonder if it might have been sewn into a  canvas item to hang it up,,(water bag etc)  Bit like brass rings were sewn in to strengthen tie points such as in the clews of sails,corners of tarps etc..Or lamp shade hanger.
