Artillery Shell
« on: August 26, 2017, 08:52 »
Can anybody ID this artillery shell trench art match box holder.
Where was the shell made? What type of shell, WW1 or WW2?

How do I post a pic here?

Just click on the Reply and follow the prompts on the Attatchments and other options. Make sure you have the picture in the computer you are posting from and it is under 2 Mb.
When i saved yours it came up 2.1. Sometimes when i crop things they get larger, i would have expected them to be less. I will try again uncropped.

I think the CF means it used cordite as the propellant and LOCO stands for American Locomotive Company. Lot number is used to identify when that batch of ammo was made. Not sure about the rest

From Google  3/16 could mean 3 inch calibre fired from a weapon with a 4 foot barrel but I may be leading you astray there.

Thanks for the replies to date.
It may be WW1 as suggested.
I have not been able to find what the numbers letters mean other than they refer to type of shell, calibre and date of manufacture but I do not know what refers to what or how to decode them.
There is a ton of info on line but none of it has helped with any accuracy.

All of the supplied info combined results in a reasonable ID of the shell.
Thanks chaps

What did you settle on as the most likely Id for the shell?
