Drake Goldfields Finds
« on: October 05, 2017, 12:21 »
Okay.  Real curve ball here.  I detected these last month while down on the Timbarra River, Northern NSW.
1.  The buckle is a buckle.  Not ferrous, probably brass.
2.  The china is probably part of a toothpaste container.
3.  The coin/token? Probably copper. Possibly ancient.  Out of context for where I found it. I have no idea of its origin and can only assume it was a 'lucky' coin or, part of someone's coin collection. I should have taken a photo before I mutilated it by cleaning it up.  If it had any value, I have probably diminished that.
Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Okay.  When I saw the lion, I immediately thought it to be from England.  But, the bird on the reverse looks South American?  It is a bird, isn't it?

I found this in June last year in the same area and soaked it in olive oil for 3 months.  Didn't make any difference, except that it is now oily to the touch.

Not much detail left on your last item.
What is the other coin or token made from and what size is it?
It might be an Inca type bird shown. I know the Spaniards ended up there but what country were the Incas from?    ( not Incland  :)  )

The first coin appears to be copper or similar to.  It’s about 12mm across. I thought Incas, too. (From Innamincka???? 😂)  But the lion is similar to English symbols. It can’t be Aussie. That’s why I thought immediately it might have been from a collection or a ‘lucky coin’.
The second piece may not even be a coin. And it’s not attracted to a magnet. I tried to clean it up a bit with Andre pens but they couldn’t make any mark on it. I put it in olive oil when I first found it but, I’ve been told using vegetable oils to clean coins is not a good idea.

Looks like a Spanish Lion and also looks hammered and if real would be very old. Check old Spanish coins on Google and see what comes up.

I have found out what the coin/token is.  It's a Spanish Blanco issued from 1471 to 1474.  I can only guess a Spaniard worked the field and it was his 'lucky' coin.

You can find it here

Did you try around the old post office and bottle dump and the paddler wheel as well ?
Must go back there one day if it weren't so far away
What was the other name for the G/field , something like Crazy Horse or something like that

.  I detected these last month while down on the Timbarra River, Northern NSW.

Being a bit "crazy" myself, I have passed through the area a couple of times, but never ventured to the specifically un-populated "township" of old!...Well done with the finds...it is certainly an unusual coin to be on the gold fields.....let alone away from the coast!....were you looking for coin and relic?, or, a bit of glitter? ...and, from your choice of detectors, which one were you using?

Hi ohb1
There is no history of nuggets being found in this area. Most of the gold was gained through sluicing and stampers.  I have been going down there since 1988 and look for old pubs, homes and diggings sites.  I use the X-Terra 705 with a 10 inch coil.  I haven’t quite mastered the Etrac, yet.  I started off with a borrowed Garrett Beach Hunter (I think that’s its name.) . Remarkably, I found quite a lot of stuff, the best being an old pistol that was totally ruined but, a cool find, nevertheless.
I have a hand dredge that I use to get payload fed to a high banker I made.  Mixed results.  Old age slows one down and it doesn’t take long for me to tire of that and pick up the detector again.
Frankly, it’s just a beautiful place to be.  Away from people and left to my own devices.

Hi ohb1
....Old age slows one down ....
Frankly, it’s just a beautiful place to be.  Away from people and left to my own devices.

I'll second both those comments!..couldn't agree more with it being a beautiful place...Ringa and I make it a habit of stopping in the area for a night or two, when on holidays...My great grandfather managed a pub down at Solferino ..further south than the Drake area....A bit hard to access that area now-days..all overgrown, and ill defined tracks!...no access via Lionsville like there once was....

Looks like a Spanish Lion and also looks hammered and if real would be very old. Check old Spanish coins on Google and see what comes up.

Good figuring out.  It turns out I was looking at the coin upside down.  It's not an eagle but, a castle.

A drawing of the mine:
It's a pity I can't see the stamper in it, as that would give me a reference to place the buildings that were there.  I can only guess that the building with the smoke coming out may have housed the steam engine that drove it?

Well, I finally got the second coin clean enough to make out detail.  Another Spanish Blanca.  This from the late 1500's. I can only guess it was a pocket spill with the other coin as they were in close proximity to each other.  There were all nationalities on the fields and one poor Spaniard lost two memories of home.
