Ray's secret weapon.
« on: December 03, 2017, 19:09 »
That was the heading of the article in the Gem and Treasure magazine in the month of August in the year 2000.
I was scrounging through a cardboard box looking for something to read in bed - as I always do - and to my surprise came upon this.
A Queensland couple met up with Ray at the Tarnagulla caravan park and spent some time with him detecting in the area. Ray got some bits of gold to show them how it was done down here.
He demonstrated his machine for cleaning up ferrous metal, an electro-magnet powered by a 12-volt car battery, that was really serious gear, he may have needed a helping hand at times but it would have done the job.

Good on you Ray - I got a real buzz out of that find - wish I was with you at those days but it was another two years later on that I caught the bug which started in the Wedderburn area.

Cheers -- Barney.

The magnet was used at Laanecoorie in a spot that two of our newer Bpc members are now hunting. The Qld bloke took my picture and sent it to GGT. I never saved a copy of the mag so it was a surprise to see the picture again. A lot of gold was found in those days. We had no digital scales and bits were just rated by length.
