Use an VMH3CS on a salt-water beach and dig everything and there will not be much left for anybody else.
I have not used mine in the gold fields yet but the detector appears to be able to handle some fairly tough ground.

Thanks Adrian,

It certainly is a depth monster. I have tried it out against by dual field and that is no slouch it has more depth than the dual field. One thing i am impressed with once you set it up for a beach your settings are kept when you turn it off and even when you take the batteries out.

I believe the electronics is set in a sold lump of composition so for ruff handling it can take some punishment. The one i got has the arm rest in tacked as most are broken off on one side. The back pack is really well made and i even got a new set of batteries with it. How it got through customs ill never know.

Will put it through some severe tests in the new year. It also has a complete set of o-rings fitted.

Regards Beeepppnnn.

Ray,

Metal detectors are of no concern whatsoever to Customs....even the ones designed for military applications. There are restrictions in other countries but Australia is not one of them. Let us know what you find !

Hi Tony,
It was the batteries i meant.  One of the family had a drone through customs   with batteries and they would not let it through.

I see.......are they Lithium Ion batteries or normal alkaline cells?

Batteries shmatteries! Lithium Ion or carbon. whatever! Batteries travel to all countries of the world by ship truck n train n plane every minute of every day. They are in all phones, computers. kids toys and all manner of electronic equipment today. and there are giant tesla lithium ion batteries powering whole cities (well almost).
Not letting these batteries through Customs coz they are in a drone or metal detector is nothing short of pure insanity and paranoia.

There is no problem with the batteries being sent with the technology, they just can't travel in the technology. Something about, fanatics and explosions that the government frowns on.... Also, lithium batteries catching fire isn't a problem, it's a U-tube moment!

Have fun with your mine detector

Just theorising here and slightly off topic. The detector is a transmitter and by ensuring batteries are removed the detector can't inadvertantly turn on and potentially cause problems for aircraft navigation sytems.

Aircraft fly through oceans of EMFs continuously. Through their own signals, through radiation from the sun and space of all wavelengths, From radio and tv stations, from radar transmitters  on the ground in the air and from orbiting satellites, from transmissions from inside the earth itself, from computers n phones. from lightning strikes.

if we are going to build AC that have flight control systems that operate wire free then that is just asking for trouble.

I watched a mate of mine take control of several of the tvs in JB HI FI this morning. From his phone. We were sitting in a cafe about 30 mtr away from the shop. :o

Adrian,
What you say is quite correct however the issue is signal strength and frequency.
Consider where the wiring is installed within the aircraft, the level of signals being carried on the wiring and the potential proximity to a radiation source(phones/pdas/detectors etc).
As an example of vulnerability,  consider the voice comms between ATC & aircrew is via AM modulated VHF. With your RAAF experience, I'm pretty sure you will appreciate how easy it is to interfere with AM.
I spent a bit of time over the past 25 years lookin into this stuff 😀.
The use of mobile phones are/ were banned on all RPT flights within Australia as not all avionics had been "hardened" to cope with the potential interference.
There have been many documented cases over the years where mobile phones have caused problems with aircraft aviation systems as well as ground based equipment.
Mate of mine used to be a tempest tester in Canberra back in the 90's and would tell how they could sit outside Russell offices and read what was on peoples CRT monitors as they hadn't been hardened and consequently acting as transmitters.

Well the batteries were lithium iron. The drone was sent from Tasmania to Melbourne with the batteries in the drone. It was sent back to tassie by customs and a request was to remove the batteries and send it back to Melbourne and then it on its way to Asia. As this was a return as it was not working properly.

Pretty bloody crummy if you ask me.

Hi beeeepnnnn,
The attached from IATA may explain the reasons behind the customs actions. Then again it may have nothing to do with the problem you encountered 😁

http://www.iata.org/whatwedo/cargo/dgr/Pages/lithium-batteries.aspx

I was aware of it as I'd checked out packaging requirements to take my gpx5000 to NZ. It turned out that the battery pack holding the Li ion batteries met the safety requirements through the design of the box..... it appears Minelab had addressed this issue in their original design spec
Regards
Terry
