An unwelcome xmas gift
« on: December 26, 2017, 18:22 »
Hi all

Went for a hunt with my excal xmas eve, midway in it went blank, nothing... zilch.
Wiggled the power lead and it gave a squeak, OMG water in the lead = corrosion = death.

Home that eve, took the cap apart where it attaches to battery, completely clean no corrosion evident. Gave the power lead a wiggle and noticed movement in the blue wire.
Well the long of it was the blue wire had snapped under the blue insulation just behind the cap where it exits. Brown wire was nice and solid.

Cut and resoldered the connections to the cap, assembled and fired up no probs. It stumped me a bit because the power lead is quite a solid unit and doesn’t bend readily. I also have it on a plugger CF shaft high mount behind my elbow for counterbalance and never put the unit on the ground when recovering targets. Always clean wash fresh water and grease up the seals under the knobs which has an anderson  guard. In any case I am no tech expert and I would imagine some would wince at my electronic soldering skills.

This morning went out and tried the machine in some bloody difficult river banks, black sand mineralisation and salt. Got 3 silvers for my troubles and a deep mobile phone. seems to be ok at this point.

AngerManagement if you read this are you still in the fixup game?? As I would be looking at some options ie pinpoint switch etc. anyway PM me if you spot this.
Happy for now, working good, was pretty nervous last night.
Ps. Machine is probably 4yrs old now had absolutely no issues until now.

Regards

Well your doing alright then Radar.

I have 3 Excals and they each break down at least once a year.

Power lead is a common issue...  Usually at the Plug end and under the restraint...  It gets done up TIGHT and with a little movement will work harden and break over time.

See the PM...

OH and the biggest issue is Postage West to East and then East to West.

Au post / Couriers are PITA and can be expensive..

Anger M

Agreed, postage for us privateers ^&*^ expensive ~ I sent  a few misc. WWII  relics to mate in Kalgoorlie and it hit me for $17 for a Auspost bag ~ Och !

But  we  have found that  most traders  seem to be signing onto contracts which benefits us, the buyer ~

My new Coiltek is $9  and we have found  delivery is  super quick ~ almost stunning !!

Stuart, it was a difficult fix for me as I am no tech expert by a long way. I am glad you have a solve, the new coil sounds like a big improvement.
I have been talking with AM with regards to some mods and hopefully we can get these done soon.

Regards

Sounds we are still on the same/ similar  extended path to recovery Radar ~

Young electrician at work ~ interested in MD,  reckons he can fix the original coil for me ~ so I will give it to him  in the  morning  when he turns up for work ~

After all whats better than a new coil ~ two coisl ~ LOL

Way to go Radar!!!!!!...I can relate to all of the above....Soldering is not in my resume of skills either...good on you for your investigative repairs ...WA and NSW seem like a world apart at times, and Australia Post seems to agree!
