This is probably a lapel or collar pin-back badge.Smurf tells me it is a crossed royal standard and union jack.I think that standard was first used back in the early 1800s to show a united kingdom..The harp for Ireland and Rampant lion for Scotland..happy to be put right there.
This site has a stack of militaria including badges from around the world..click on online shop.

A mate of mine found this button while gold detecting around Waanyarra in the Golden Triangle and was wondering what it might have been from.
We had a few thoughts on the VR. Could it be Volunteer Rifles, Victoria Regina or Victoria Railways.
The Back of the button is hard to read due to my shaky hand with the iPhone, but it says 'Triple Gilt'
Any Ideas?

I have found this one on the Powerhouse Museum website (Pic from Website)
http://www.powerhousemuseum.com/collection/database/?irn=82451&search=police+button&images=&c=&s=
It's NSW Mounted Police, Australia, 1850-1860
Anyone know if the Victorian Police might have had the same buttons during the gold rush?

It's the one on the left. Not sure if its silver or not. It has an indian head on it. The other one on the right, is a 4 hole one with "four holes improved" around it.

Hi all, I have posted this once already but couldn't  see it so am trying it again. Found this Rising Sun badge on the Ovens Goldfields, it is a second edition badge made for the returned soldiers from the Boer War. Has any one found one of these before. Not sure if it is rare.

A selection of buttons found, top L/H black button looks Chinese? also metal broken one has what looks like a Knight riding a horse with a sword in his hand. The words, WARR---- SUPERIOR written on it, I think is a button, if so, it appears pretty old. it's very thick and heavy. Any clues?

Yes its very rare and a fantastic find! I'm jealous as hell! FOTM material absolutely. Plenty of rising suns on Ebay, but hardly ever see one of these.

Canadian Pacific Railways Seamans Button found here in Melbourne
needs more of a clean up and trying to work out the makers name on the back.
Possibly WW2 era cant find alot on it, but their ships were used in the Pacific.
There were also their passenger Steam Ships cruising the world from i think late 19th Century.

Joe Taylor The Tailor was a Melbourne Tailor in the early 20th Century (not to be confused with Squizzy Taylor the crim), he had an interesting career, he was sued over a suit and fined $10000 pounds he was continuously broken into in his numerous suburban shops. I found one of his buttons about 2 months ago in an old park.

Picked up this nice Qld Boy Scouts Button the other day while hunting with Buttsy.

It came up as 2.5 KHz as the dominant frequency, so that puts it in the silver/ copper catergory.

Tried to find it on Google, but no luck.......maybe one of our Gurus can help.

It is the same size as a 10 cent piece, so would be rather large for a shirt button, & made by A.J.Parkes, Brisbane

It's bigger,  like a duffle cost button, but I don't recall any of those during my scouting days.

would love to know the story behind that US eagle find!  If found in an area that was worked i nthe 1850-60's i would say that is a pre civil war button and not a union one.

the following posts are a number of my military buttons I've found throughout Australia from 1995 till current.

this post is 2 x of the Australian Colonial militia that served as the defense here when the English garrison left i n1870 until the federalised Australian army was created after 1901.  the 1st one is a Victorian one and the 2nd is the 1st Australian horse.
