DIY Wireless headphones for under $25
« on: October 12, 2013, 12:24 »
I am experimenting with some cheap off the shelf DIY FM Wireless headphones, less than $25,
they are plug and play, no soldering required, just waiting on postie.

If I can get the correct combination of transmitter and receiver with no delay in signal,
and suitable for MD, I will report back with results.

The FM transmitter has arrived looks good so far
digital read out for frequency, needs to go on charger for a while.

Has 3.5mm plug so will plug straight into 6.5mm adapter for the headphone
socket that is on most MD's.

While I am waiting for the FM headphones to arrive, I picked up a set of FM cordless headphones from the reject shop, $12,
they work OK,
now that I have repaired them,
very poor soldering inside the transmitter, but they do not store the last frequency you were listening to which is very annoying, having to rescan each time you switch them on

More later.

The transmitter works fine, has a nice digital display to show the transmit frequency.

I tried it on my Ace250, the audio output level was way to high which over drove the transmitter,
so I inserted an inline volume control and that brought the level down very nicely, and now gives very good audio tones through receiver.

This transmitter cost a whole $8.95 posted from Sydney, and the inline volume control was $1.50 posted from china.

Hi I will post more info soon, but its all off ebay.
Take notice that you need the TX with a 3.5mm jack plug that has only the three connections on the plug, tip, ring and sleeve, you dont want the one with two rings.

Warning
these small transmitters are very easy to loose .

Today while in the reject shop, I noticed a small scanning FM receiver with ear buds for a whole $5.00
which would be ideal to pop into your shirt pocket and away you go.

Deteck Australia has some great headphones and transmitters. They charge from Usb and look professional quality but i don't know how much. They have the large plug, just plug the transmitter into your detector headphone socket and wear the cord free headphones

Saw the local PO with Bluetooth headphones for 35 bucks...I am guessing combine that with a Bluetooth transmitter and that's a wireless kit taken care of?

If you can find a compatible bluetooth TX and RX I guess it should work I am not a fan of bluetooth, the beauty of FM is you can test it on just about any broadcast band FM receiver, such as the radio in your car, your bedside clock radio, your phone etc etc.

The $5.00 fm receiver from the reject shop works very well, and it remembers the last frequency when you turn it off.

Bluetooth has been tried by another person, and it failed due to, too much lag.

Does this mean that an FM system could still be a goer

Cheers
