Introduce yourself and say g'day 2017/18 and beyond.
« on: November 06, 2016, 18:54 »
This is for Current Active Members and NEW Members especially to introduce themselves and let us know a little or a lot about yourself.

What detector your swinging, what you like to dig up and even post a pic or 2 before starting your own finds thread.

Current members can make the new people feel welcome and pint them in the right direction for relevant information.

As we move forward it's important to get to know the new crew and re-introduce ourselves to some of those that have supported the forum since the beginning.

So Start Your own thread Introducing yourself and let's get to know each other a little better.

NOTHING WEIRD!! LOL

Have Fun out there and Happy Hunting

Cheers Ray,

I changed the topic name a little as I wanted to start a newer section so we can get to know each other all over again.

Re-Introductions from the older members and the new people can then see who is active and who specialises in what areas of the hobby.

As some of our Talent has left it has opened up the door for some new talent to step up if they wish too.

Thanks again

Hi my name is Teresa and I have a lot to learn
« Reply #3 on: May 19, 2017, 20:45 »
Hi I am very new , very green, don't even belong to any other forums.  I requested to join because my husband and I bought land near Ballarat a few years ago (part of an old gold dig) and as a joke for our grandchildren decided to hire (bad move) detector. The aim was to bury some coins and watch the kids find them using the detector (turns out it was faulty).  As it was Easter weekend the neighbouring land owners called in and the chap next door told us he had recovered quite a few, financially rewarding, small pieces of gold in the last 12 months.  That's when I decided I needed a new hobby...gold would be nice, but even the odd horse shoe nail or any other relics would be AWESOME....problem is ... we don't own a detector and while we would be happy to buy one, we don't know what to look for. Can anyone suggest which one we should look at and why? Would really appreciate you thoughts.  Thanks.

Welcome to the forum Teresa.
Nearly all gold prospectors use Minelab machines but the French Deus might be worth a look at. If you have Facebook check on the Ballarat branch of the PMAV. They will be helpfull.
( Prospectors and Miners Association)
I think the Ballarat Mining Exchange sell Deus and Days in Ballarat sell minelab.
The Minelab 4500 is a world class machine and used by a lot of members of the Bendigo Prospecting club.
A lot of machines may use the word Gold in their advertising but are basically glorified coin machines. A coin and Relic machine can tell the difference between gold and iron but don't have much depth. I will foward my mobile number in a personal message in case you want to know more details. Check out the Bendigo Prospecting Club on Facebook. Our last post refers to Ballarat.

Welcome Teresa,
If you're In Ballarat area I would head to 2 places then make your detector decision. It will be driven by a lot of factors, but budget is probably the biggest as Detectors can range from a couple a hundred to over 10K.
Place Number 1 is E E Day the Chainsaw guy that is a pretty handy detectorist as well from what I hear. They Have the Minelab range and you can look at the different machines and see what suits. But don't buy anything!
Then Head over to The Mining Exchange Gold Shop in Lidiard street and check out the Garrett and XP Detectors.
Lastly head to a coffee shop and calmly make your decision.
There are just so many Detectors out there and the advice you will get will vary a lot. Best way is to take a look at the majors and then make your decision based on Budget, what is comfortable, what will work for you etc etc.
Hope that helps.

G'day all, I joined the forum in 2014 ( thanks for keeping me so far) started with an AT pro, found plenty of stuff, a couple of gold rings and I was hooked. Purchased an ATX in 2015 and found a nugget. Really hooked now, added a gpx5000 to the collection in  2016 and have well and truly covered all the costs of my equipment now. I love being outdoors and this hobby gets you out and about. I have gold fever real bad as of 2017 and I can't see myself ever going a week without detecting. welcome to all our new members.

Hello new members and not so new members. My name is Geoff and i have been metal Detecting for nearly a year. Brought my first Detector last year (CTX3030) and havent looked back. Detecting was one of those things i wanted to do but didnt have time. Its a natural progression from diving for relics which is what i used to do. My current job has me at sea for a month and then a month off. I have had to restrict myself to detecting no more than three days a week. I could easily do seven days but my house would probably fall apart and my wife would leave me.....
I have been part of this forum since i have started detecting and think it has a great bunch of people involved, lots of great advice and inspiration on seeing other peoples finds. Ok maybe a bit of jealousy when i see people posting pics of cricket buckles and gold sovereigns,,,, one day!!
But i look forwad to many years here.

Gidday rwork.
Yeah we do have satellite internet coverage at sea, but it can be a bit patchy depending on where we are and what direction we are heading. At the moment we are a couple of thousand miles west of West Australia so we only get good coverage heading east or north. Still it has been enough to get to 100% lets hope i can keep it...

I see you are at 100%, do you have satellite internet when you are at sea? Good to see your continued posts Geoff.

Just found this forum. Great to see others with an interest in metal detecting. I come from Rosemeadow and am a newbie to all this. Have a Minelab Detector. Would like to go out with others to detect.

Hi
Thanks for the welcome. It is a X-Terra 705. Not sure if this is for relics but is definately for coins and gold.

The difference is in the coils and programs, relics, coins & jewelry  is the round Concentric coil, gold & relics the Elliptical dd coil.
A model was sold with both but aftermarket coils add complications to descriptions.
A good relic detector, so-so for goldfields use.
Lots of info on the Minelab board. (Target ID table is great).

Hi fellow enthusiasts,
Brian here, I'm sporting a Xp D?us and a xterra 705 (705 rarely gets used now).  My best find is my next find.  My favourite targets are pre-decimal coins then gold jewellery so you'll probably see me around old towns or the beach.  I'm constantly travelling around to detect new places so if hear of me detecting in your area, don't be shy.  I was hurt at work in 2015 so I took up this hobby to motivate myself to exercise more, now I do it most days.  Just recently purchased the waterproof kit for the d?us so I'll be in the drink mainly for the next few weeks to see how well it goes.  Looking to purchase a high frequency coil next so I can give alluvial gold prospecting a try.  Thanks for having me.  Cheers...

Hi from WA.  We (Sneaky and I) are NOR and swinging Garrett AT Pros anywhere we can on the weekend and the odd weeknight.  I do love the coins and those curio's that feed you information about history. Who would have guessed I would be so interested in history as I am now! Beach detecting has proven very disappointing for both of us but we still have a dabble now and again.  When boils down to it we are both addicted, especially me!

Greetings from sunny Hobart :). I have been metal detecting on and off for about 30 years now. I started with a Tandy electronics "Realistic" detector which cost me the grand sum of about 40 bucks new. I was in Sydney back then and detected parks & beaches. It paid for itself in no time (back then there were plenty of targets at both locales). After moving I had a break from detecting for about 10 years, then my son purchased a Minelab detector and that got me back into it. I now live in Hobart and I am using a White's Coinmaster GT - very happy with it.
