Stuffed shoulders.
« on: May 03, 2017, 21:47 »
Over the years I've enjoyed success in my chosen field of detecting having made some great finds.

Alas, this has come at some cost. I've experienced a lot of discomfort in the form of shoulder pain as a result of swinging a coil through water for many hours at a time and up to 10 days at a stretch without a break.
Lately the pain has become a little over whelming so I decided to get my shoulders checked out.
I got the results from ultrasounds today.....tears in rotator cuffs in both shoulders. Surgery required to both....what a pain.

I'm reliably informed by my niece, she's a theatre tech, that its only keyhole surgery and doesn't involve a lengthy stay....overnight at worst but I believe it may take many months of rehab to get back to near normal.

At least I now know that I wasn't just being a sook and there was a reason for the discomfort.
Others in a similar position might choose to get themselves checked out also thereby possibly avoiding the crap I now have to go through.

Cheers.

Jeebus mate. At least in can be fixed! As an old baseballer I consume a few Voltarin pre swing. I've also discovered the minelab pro swing 45, makes for pain free days.

Hopefully the surgery will get you back to normal but will it happen again quickly if you keep swimming and detecting?

"We can rebuild him " they said , maybe you wont be a 6 million dollar man , just a 50 grander ! Hope it goes well , you just have to think of it as maintenance after carrying all that gold and scrap metal out of the ocean . None of us are getting any younger so repair work will be needed . I was kicked in the knee by a bull 3 weeks ago and now have cartilage crunching in the joint , reckon that will be a pinhole clean out too . All the best and do all the rehab even though it's a P.I.T.A.

Thanks all for the comments.

Its not a "pain" thing thats the issue. Being of sturdy peasant stock I've learnt to put up with that, having said that it was the pain that took me to see the quack but only cause a guy I was talking to convinced me that cortisone shots were the way to go. He's been having them for over 30 years with no ill effects so I asked about them at my recent checkup.
The doc insisted I have ultrasound scans first and its these that have revealed the extent of the damage.
He feels that if I ignore the issue then I'm a candidate for arthritis, which would not be a good thing.

But reading up on whats involved with surgery suggests, even if its keyhole is 4-6 weeks with an arm in a sling followed by 4-6 months of rehab.
Clearly I can't do both shoulders at the same time so worst case scenario, I might lose up to a year.
Now I do not want to lose that much time off work.

I haven't had a chance to have an in depth discussion with the doc yet but clearly I've had this issue for a few years and there's no sign of arthritis yet.
Although theres certain arm movements that are more painful than others I can easily raise both arms up, out to the side or where ever I want.
I take no anti inflammatory pills, use no creams of jells and only on rare occasions take the odd Panadol Osteo.

At this stage I'd rather give the detecting away rather than have the surgery and miss months if not a year off work.
I'm definitely going to have to give up 8 hour days swinging over ground where I know I'll be lucky if I arse onto one bit of gold and just cherry pick my days in only the most productive of spots and only when conditions are spot on.

But I'll keep you guys posted....thanks again folks.

You're gonna have to do your rehab homework strictly. Trust me, shoulders are complex bastard joints.

Well, I finally got to see my doc about what he reckons about my shoulders.

The supraspinatus tendons in both shoulders are torn. In the right shoulder the two ends of the tendon are about 2cm apart and in the left its about 1.5cm.
Basically, surgery is not an option. I'm too old, the tendons are too stuffed and the end result might be that I end up worse off.....definitely not going through a year of shit with that prognosis.

The upside is that basically, I can just carry on as before. Take pain killers before and after a hunt and apart from a small risk of arthritis in later life,  all should be well.
Wish he'd have told me this over the phone.....would have saved a lot of depression and I've missed some beautiful flat days.
Still, alls well that ends well.

Now I will make an appointment with a physio to get the right exercises to keep the shoulders as strong as possible.
Cheers.

My bloody IV stand keeps getting stuck in sand. 1-foot dig in surf = 200ml of anti-inflammatories via drip.
