Seen a similar one before and I know there is a good book out there with them. This is a good reference just needs to be clearer.  I like the buttons for their historical value and if your into money value some are literally worth their weight in gold.

A pity the pictures are terrible. I think there would be buttons mentioned in Resources but too many posts to wade through now.
This link might have better pictures but it covers a larger time frame.

I have put a bump on the button post.

ItUp in Brisbane visiting Mum for a few days, and had a chance to visit the QLD state library to chase up a better copy of the newspaper page. The below is an image crop off the microfishe image, which shows a better image than the trove grab. I was advised the original newspaper could be requested from archive, and a photocopy taken if image was not satisfactory.  I've place higher resolution images here: https://goo.gl/6UcjFx  . Below is a reduce 'all' picture. Hoping this will help a few hunters identify THAT button they have recovered!

That VR with bugle that says Victorian Rangers was also the first NSW Militia button and stood for Volunteer Rifles. I've found close to 40 of them so far in NSW.
